Nothing bites into a Flametal vein until you have the Black Metal Pickaxe, so it is less an upgrade than the tool that opens up the Ashlands. It deals 49 pierce and 49 pickaxe damage, 98 across all types, the highest total damage of any tool in the game. Pierce damage hurts the Tick and the Troll more than most things, and that is the reason to carry it.
How to Craft
Crafted at a level 2 Forge from:
- 3x Yggdrasil Wood: chopped from Yggdrasil shoots in the Mistlands.
- 25x Black Metal: smelted from Black Metal Scrap in a Blast Furnace.

When to Use It
This is mid game gear. Its Yggdrasil Wood comes from the Mistlands, which puts it behind Yagluth and the sea crossing after him. The Ashlands and the Deep North still lie beyond it.
Upgrades

Properties
Here is a tool checklist, because missing one of these is how an evening gets wasted. Get the Antler Pickaxe the moment Eikthyr is down, since it is the gate on copper and tin. Upgrade your pickaxe at every tier: the harder deposits need it, and the Pickaxes skill levels up on its own while you mine. Keep the hammer, hoe and cultivator in a chest at base rather than on your back, and carry a spare axe, because chopping breaks tools fastest.
- Skill: Pickaxes and Axes, which level up with use and lose a slice on death.
Notes
- Pickaxes are the only way to mine ore deposits and dig terrain.
- The Antler Pickaxe unlocks when you defeat Eikthyr and is the gate on copper and tin.
