Metals & Ores

Metals and ores are the backbone of progression in Valheim, and every weapon and armour tier above leather is made from one of them. They are also the only items in the game that cannot pass through a Portal. Ore, scrap and ingots all have to travel by ship or on foot, which is why smelters usually sit near the water and why the next mine often decides where your next outpost goes.

Progression Order

Copper and Tin are found in the Black Forest and mined with the Antler Pickaxe. A Forge combines 2 copper and 1 tin into Bronze.
Iron comes from the Swamp as Scrap Iron, dug out of Muddy Scrap Piles inside Sunken Crypts. You need a Bronze Pickaxe or better, and it smelts in a normal Smelter.
Silver sits in buried veins in the Mountains, which you find with the Wishbone from Bonemass. It needs an Iron Pickaxe and is also processed in a Smelter.
Black Metal drops as Black Metal Scrap from Fulings in the Plains, and it needs a Blast Furnace.
Flametal from the Ashlands is mined as Flametal Ore or found in chests, and it also needs a Blast Furnace.
Bloodgold from the Deep North is smelted from Petrified Tissue, which you blast out of petrified gammeltrolls with ember charges. It also needs a Blast Furnace.

Later biomes follow the same pattern: a new ore or scrap, a new processing station if one is needed, and a higher-tier pickaxe to mine it.

Smelting and Crafting

Raw ore and scrap are useless until you refine them:

A Smelter, fuelled by Coal, turns Copper Ore, Tin Ore, Scrap Iron and Silver Ore into their ingots.
Black Metal Scrap and Flametal Ore need a Blast Furnace.
Bronze is the only true alloy, and you make it at the Forge, not in a smelter.

Coal comes from wood burned in a Charcoal Kiln, and without a steady coal supply your smelting stops.

Portals and Travel

Every ore, scrap and ingot is flagged no-teleport. That one rule forces real logistics: longship runs, coastal bases and careful planning of how much metal you can carry. The Megingjord exists largely because these stacks are so heavy.

Dropped metal never despawns, so you can move a full load in several trips if you need to.

Notes

All metals and ores stack to 30.
Each tier of ore needs a pickaxe made from the tier before it.
Smelting burns Coal, so plan Charcoal Kiln production alongside mining runs.
Bronze is made at the Forge from 2 Copper and 1 Tin. Every other metal is smelted straight from its ore.
Black Metal and Flametal need a Blast Furnace instead of a normal Smelter.
