Tools

Tools are the items that change the world rather than fight it. A Hammer builds, a Hoe moves earth and a Cultivator plants. The axes and pickaxes that fell trees and break rock count here too, because in Valheim they are weapons that happen to do a job. The saddles sit apart, since they carry you rather than change anything.

Properties

Pros

• Nothing else in the game reshapes terrain. The Hoe raises, levels and paves ground, and a flat floor is the difference between a base you can build and a hillside.
• The axes and pickaxes gate every tier: the Bronze Axe for Birch and Oak, the Antler Pickaxe for copper and tin, and the Iron Pickaxe for silver. The material you cannot cut is the tier you have not reached.
• Most come off a Workbench or a Forge, 11 between them, so the class never waits on a rare station.
• The Hammer and the Hoe cost no resources to use, only to build, and destroying anything you placed refunds it.

Cons

• A tool takes an inventory slot and stacks to 1. A full kit is the Hammer, the Hoe, the Cultivator, an axe and a pickaxe, all before you carry a weapon.
• The axes double as poor weapons and the pickaxes as worse ones, so carrying one is not the same as being armed.
• The Fishing Rod is useless without Fishing Bait, and the bait comes from Haldor rather than from anything you can make.
• Durability runs out mid-job. If your pickaxe breaks in a copper deposit, the ore stays in the ground until you walk back to a workbench.

Notes

• Repairing is free: any station that could have made a tool restores it to full durability.
• The Hammer, Hoe and Cultivator open a build menu instead of swinging, and the menu is the same everywhere.
• An axe swing also damages whatever is behind the tree, and a falling trunk can kill a player standing under it.
• A pickaxe deals pickaxe damage, which most rock and ore are weak to but no creature is.
