Combat

Pros

A pickaxe is the only way into ore, and into the terrain itself for levelling ground and digging moats.
The hammer builds everything, and the hoe and cultivator shape and farm the ground under it.
Pickaxes carry real damage and the Pickaxes skill levels itself while you mine.
Every tool is one-handed, so a shield stays up while you work.

Cons

Slow swings and no combat reach: a pickaxe in a fight is a last resort.
Each is gated behind a metal tier, so the Black Metal Pickaxe is a late-game unlock for an early-game job.
Durability drains fast in use, and a tool that breaks mid-dig means a walk home.

Builds

There is no tool build, but there is a tool checklist, and being without one of these is how an evening gets wasted. Antler Pickaxe the moment Eikthyr is down, because it is the gate on copper and tin. Upgrade the pickaxe at every tier: the harder deposits need it, and the Pickaxes skill comes up on its own while you mine. Keep the hammer, hoe and cultivator in a chest at the base rather than on your back, and keep a spare axe: chopping is what breaks tools fastest.

There are 14 in the class: 5 at Workbench, then 5 at Forge, then 1 at Dvergr structures, then 1 at Haldor, then 1 at Player crafting menu, then 1 at The Bog Witch.

Skill: Pickaxes and Axes, which levels by use rather than by choice.

Notes
