Materials

Materials are the foundation of every upgrade path in Valheim. Almost everything you craft, build or cook comes from resources you farm, mine, chop or loot. Each new biome unlocks materials your previous tools could not gather, which is why progression is so tightly tied to the order of the Biomes.

The early game runs on basic Wood, Stone, Flint and simple hides. Once you reach the Black Forest, you start mining copper and tin for bronze, and you need Surtling Cores just to build the stations that turn ore into usable metal. The Swamp brings iron and Ancient Bark, and the Mountains bring silver and wolf materials. In the Plains you have to raid Fuling villages for black metal, flax and barley.

Later biomes raise the requirements again. The Mistlands revolve around Black Cores, Yggdrasil Wood, Sap and soft tissue for refined eitr. The Ashlands bring in flametal, grausten, Ashwood and a new set of creature drops. Every tier is locked behind both the right tool and the right biome.

You use these materials across Crafting Stations and Building Elements, and most of them can go through a Portal. The big exception is ore and ingots, which is why most players keep their smelters and kilns near the coast instead of at the main base. Stone Portals later lift this restriction for some materials. Stack sizes are fixed, dropped materials never despawn, and some late woods (Ancient Bark and Ashwood) cannot be turned into coal.

Notes

• Materials have no quality levels: you spend them rather than upgrade them.
• Stack sizes are fixed per item. Wood and Stone usually stack to 50, most smaller items and seeds to 100, and cores often lower.
• Ore and metal bars cannot go through a normal Portal, though Stone Portals later lift this restriction for some materials.
• Materials dropped on the ground never despawn, so a full inventory only costs you a trip back.
• Ancient Bark and Ashwood cannot be burned in a Charcoal Kiln. For coal you still need regular Wood, Finewood or Corewood.
• The most efficient chest sorting follows recipe needs: wood and stone together, ores and coal together, hides and bones together, seeds and food materials together.
