Kill a Serpent in deep water and its Serpent Scales sink with the body. The plating is easy enough to win out on the Ocean and much harder to keep.
How to Get It
Serpents hunt in open water, most often at night and in foul weather, and the scales only reach your inventory if the serpent dies in the shallows. The reliable method is an Abyssal Harpoon: hook the serpent, drag it towards a shore or a shallow shelf and finish it there. Fighting from the deck of a karve or longship works well enough, but anything killed over deep water takes its scales down with it, and only the meat floats. No tool tier gates the drop itself; all that matters is surviving the fight at sea.
