No one wears iron plate until The Elder gives up the Swamp Key. Iron starts as scrap buried in the muddy piles of a Sunken Crypt in the Swamp, and it only becomes a bar in the Smelter.
How to Get It
Muddy scrap piles fill the crypts, and a crypt door only opens for someone carrying the Swamp Key, so The Elder comes first. The piles break with a pickaxe, and the Antler Pickaxe is enough for them. The Scrap Iron then has to be hauled to a smelter and burned down with Coal. Neither scrap nor bars can go through a portal unless you have raised a Portal Stone, so most runs end with a boat ride and a smelter built near the water. Smaller amounts turn up later in Frost Cave doors, Mistlands viaducts and the ancient pots of the Ashlands.
Notes
- Iron is extremely useful, and it goes into highly durable building parts and equipment right through the endgame.
- Like other metals, it cannot be teleported without a Portal Stone.
- Iron reaches well past the Swamp tier: later Biomes tiers use it too, in the Padded armour of the Plains and the Carapace armour of the Mistlands.
