The Serpent Scale Shield is plated with scales cut from a sea Serpent, and it is your reward for hunting the Ocean instead of just sailing across it. It has 60 block armour.
How to Craft
You craft it at a level 3 Forge from:
- 10x Finewood: chopped from Birch and Oak trees with a Bronze Axe or better.
- 4x Iron: smelted from Scrap Iron in a Smelter.
- 8x Serpent Scale: dropped by sea Serpents in the Ocean.
| Name | Image | Biome | Crafting Station | Spawn ID |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Finewood | Meadows | - | spawn FineWood

| Iron | Swamp | Smelter | spawn Iron

| Serpent Scale | Ocean | - | spawn SerpentScale

When to Use It
This is an early game shield. Iron comes from Sunken Crypts in the Swamp, so you can make it once The Elder is down.
Upgrades
You can upgrade it 3 times after crafting, and each level needs the Forge built one step higher than the last. The stats quoted elsewhere are all quality 1, so this table shows the ladder your own copy sits on:
| Quality | Crafting Station | Block armor | Durability | Resources |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Forge (Level 3) | 60 | 250 |
|
| 2 | Forge (Level 4) | 66 | 300 |
|
| 3 | Forge (Level 5) | 72 | 350 |

| 4 | Forge (Level 6) | - | - |

Properties
It gives silver-tier block armour for iron. Its 60 block armour matches the Silver Shield, with no Silver in the recipe: it needs less Iron than the Iron Tower Shield and uses Serpent Scales instead.
It also resists pierce damage while blocking, and no other shield in the game modifies a damage type. Better still, this stacks with pierce resistance from armour such as the Root Harnesk, which makes it the answer to the Deathsquito and to Fuling archers.
As a tower shield, it cannot parry. It slows your movement by 10% while drawn and raises the cost of a dodge roll by the same 10%, and in exchange it blocks harder than anything else in its tier. What you give up is the parry, which staggers the attacker so it takes double damage.
Notes
- A block uses up to 10 stamina, in proportion to the damage that got through. It fails if that leftover damage fills your stagger bar, which is 40% of maximum health, or if you run out of stamina.
- Block force is the knockback dealt back to a melee attacker. It scales from 50% to 100% with the block armour actually used.
- Each weapon type has its own parry bonus too: 4x on a knife and 6x on Flesh Rippers. Both beat every shield, though they only apply to the weapon's own small block armour.
