The Ocean covers everything under 26 m of water, and it is what breaks the world into islands. You cross it rather than live in it: long empty stretches, then a serpent's wake in a storm, or a small rocky island that turns out to be breathing.

Locations

It fills every gap between the landmasses, wherever the seabed drops below 26 m. The water off the Ashlands is different: it boils, and the thunderstorms never stop.

Location Image What's Inside
Shipwreck Shipwreck A broken hull in the shallows off the Black Forest, Swamp and Plains. Three in four hold a chest, and the hull breaks for finewood.
World Edge World Edge Where the sea pours off the rim of the disk. The current drags you over, and what you drop there is gone.

Boss

Serpent

The Ocean has no altar and no summon. Its signature creature is the Serpent, which surfaces at night or in a storm. It has 400 health and a 70-damage bite, and it is weak to frost.

Two other bosses decide how the sea treats you: Moder's power is the sailing power, and The Queen unlocks the Drakkar.

Hazards

  • Drowning: swim stamina drains fast, and at zero you start taking damage.
  • Losing your boat far from land usually ends that character's day.
  • A serpent bite deals 70 damage and will one-shot anyone who is under-armoured.
  • Boats take damage from hard landings off a wave and 20 a second while capsized. A Karve flips, while a Longship rarely does.
  • Metal, Coins, pelts, Serpent Scales and the Serpent Trophy all sink, while wood, meat and your gravestone float.
  • The current at the World Edge drags a ship over the rim, and nothing that goes with it comes back.

Lore

Hugin warns that the southern waters are deadly and that you will need something sturdier unless you want to sleep with the fishes. Harald, a man from the coast, left a stone in the Black Forest complaining that the seas refuse him. Ulf, having found the Plains too hard, simply wrote "I will build a boat."

The Leviathan is the Hafgufa of Norse myth, a sea-beast so large that sailors moor on it and call it an island.

Notes

  • Mark every Leviathan you see. They are rare, and once one submerges it never comes back.
  • Kill serpents in shallow water or harpoon them toward the shore, or the scales and the trophy sink to the seabed.
  • Use a Raft for island hopping, a Karve for the coast, a Longship for open water and a Drakkar for the Ashlands.
  • Crosswind and tailwind are within a few per cent of each other. Only a headwind is genuinely bad, and paddling often beats tacking.
  • The rudder only works while the boat is moving.
  • Swimming is a skill, but sailing is not.
