The Abyssal Harpoon is a weapon you throw to keep something alive. The primary attack latches onto a creature and drags whatever it has hooked back towards you. That is how Boars end up inside pens, and how Sea Serpents end up on a beach where you can collect their drops. You mine the Chitin for it from the barnacles on a Leviathan out in the Ocean. It deals 10 pierce damage, which makes it the weakest spear, and that is the point: it is the one you can make first. Pierce damage hurts a Troll more than most things, which is what to carry it for. Think of it as a relocation tool rather than a weapon.
How to Craft
You craft it at a level 2 Workbench from:
- 8x Finewood: chopped from Birch and Oak trees with a Bronze Axe or better.
- 30x Chitin: mined from the Abyssal Barnacles on a Leviathan's back.
- 3x Leather Scraps: dropped by Boars and Bats, and dug out of Muddy Scrap Piles.

When to Use It
This is an early game weapon. It needs Black Forest materials, so you can make it once you have beaten Eikthyr and crafted the Antler Pickaxe.
Upgrades
You can upgrade it 3 times after crafting, and each level needs the station one step higher than the last. The other figures on this page are for quality 1, so this table shows where your own copy sits:
| Quality | Crafting Station | Pierce | Durability | Resources |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Workbench (Level 2) | 10 | 50 |

Properties
It leashes rather than kills, and 10 pierce is next to nothing. The primary throw latches onto any creature except a boss. When the leashed creature tries to move away, it is dragged towards you instead, and that drains your stamina the whole time.
Here is what it is really for: walking a Boar into a pen without building a corridor, and hauling a Serpent into shallow water so you can collect the Serpent Scales off a corpse that would otherwise sink.
The leash breaks easily. Attacking again, swapping weapons, walking too far, running out of stamina or dragging the target through something solid all end it. The usual answer is a Medium Stamina Mead, since your stamina keeps regenerating while the target struggles.
Notes
- It does not work on fish.
- A ship's rudder does not break the leash, so you can tow a hooked Serpent behind your boat.
- With friendly fire on, players can harpoon each other and, with some care, launch each other a very long way.
