The Alghoul is a Necrophage and a close relative of the Ghoul. It is bigger, stronger and smarter than a ghoul, and it often leads a whole pack. Alghouls gather on battlefields and wherever corpses lie in shallow graves or are left to rot.
Lore
The dwarven warrior Yarpen Zigrin summed it up: "An alghoul's basically a badarse ghoul." Alghouls differ from ordinary ghouls in size, strength and coloring. Above all, they differ in intelligence. Ghouls and graveirs are simple creatures that cannot plan even the most basic ambush. Alghouls and their close relatives, such as cemetaurs, can think ahead. That makes them far more dangerous.
Ghouls are wise enough to recognize a brighter mind when they see one. They let alghouls and cemetaurs lead their packs. A pack led this way terrorizes everything in its path. It attacks lone travelers, caravans and even farms.
Behaviour
Like all necrophages, alghouls feed on the dead, and they live among ghouls in their nests. They are most dangerous at dusk and at night, when they fight with double strength. In battle, an alghoul tries risky moves meant to knock its opponent to the ground. Once the victim is down, the rest of the pack moves in and tears it to shreds.
Weaknesses
Coat the silver sword with Necrophage Oil. When facing a pack, kill the alghoul first. The other beasts lose their edge once their leader falls.
An alghoul can let out a piercing scream. The scream stuns anyone nearby and sends the ghouls around it into a frenzy. When enraged, an alghoul grows spines on its back. The spines hurt anyone who strikes it up close. Axii forces the spines back in.
Like an ordinary ghoul, a wounded alghoul can fall into a blind rage and charge. An experienced witcher steps out of its way and strikes from behind. For an inexperienced one, that charge often ends the Path.
