The Ghoul is a Necrophage that feeds on corpses wherever the dead lie. A pack of ghouls is the first real fight of the game. It comes at the start of the main quest Lilac and Gooseberries in White Orchard. Ghouls are common across White Orchard and Velen.

Lore

A children's rhyme sums them up. Ghouls creep and crawl at night and eat everything in sight. They would gladly chop up a child for a ghoulish stew.

Ghouls and their cousins, the graveirs, are hard to describe. In part they look like humans. Taken as a whole, though, they are the opposite of everything human. They have arms and legs like men, yet they walk on all fours like dogs or badgers. Their faces look strangely familiar. Yet those faces show no feeling, no reason, not even a spark of awareness. Only one thing drives them: an endless hunger for human flesh.

Behaviour

Ghouls usually feed in small groups, sometimes led by an Alghoul. They like fresh corpses best. That is why they gather wherever there are new graves: cemeteries, crypts, catacombs and battlefields. They also hunt the living whenever they get the chance, above all when they have strength in numbers. Ghouls are most dangerous at dusk and at night.

Weaknesses

Coat the silver sword with Necrophage Oil. On its own, a ghoul poses little threat to a trained witcher.

Wounded ghouls are another matter. A badly hurt ghoul can fly into a mad frenzy. It then attacks fiercely, ignores its own safety and shrugs off every wound. An enraged ghoul also heals itself. Kill it first, before it can recover.

In Lilac and Gooseberries, the witcher and Vesemir are talking in a forest clearing near White Orchard. A pack of ghouls attacks them there.

In Contract: The Mystery of the Byways Murders, ghouls prowl the village of Byways in Velen. The commander of a Nilfgaardian patrol hands out the job. The ghouls have to be cleared before the search for the surviving villagers. The trail then leads to Sarasti.

Ghouls also lurk in the sewers under Novigrad in The Great Escape. They wait with a Rotfiend behind a wall that Aard can break. In Toussaint, a few ghouls lurk near the crypt in La Cage au Fou, a main quest of Blood and Wine.
