The Imp is a Doppler, one of the Relicts. It is a shapeshifting thief that pesters the merchants of Novigrad. It is the target of a level 13 witcher contract posted in Hierarch Square.

Lore

The Imp began as a thief that plagued the market stalls of Novigrad. The hunt soon showed that the Imp was no imp at all. It was a Doppler.

Dopplers are also called vexlings or changelings. They can take the form of any humanoid or animal they please. The change is no simple illusion that a spell can break. It is a true and complete transformation. Even a witcher's medallion stays quiet near one, because a Doppler gives off the same aura as the being it copies. Their sharp minds and cunning would make them perfect assassins or thieves. Nature gave them gentle, timid hearts instead, and they avoid bloodshed at all costs.

This Doppler stands out even among its kind. It had noble reasons for the harm it caused humans, which sets it apart from most monsters.

Behaviour

The Imp works the market stalls of Novigrad. The merchants' guild suffers most, since the creature keeps stealing wares from its members. Like other Dopplers, it usually avoids a fight. It prefers to slip away and change its face. Once it is cornered, though, it becomes extremely dangerous.

Weaknesses

Coat the blade with Relict Oil. A cornered Doppler turns the fight into a duel with a mirror image. The copy has all of its opponent's strengths and abilities. With odds that even, only luck or destiny decides the winner.

Patience wins this duel. Wait for the Doppler to attack, then counter and punish the opening. Once beaten, the Doppler can be spared or finished off.

Imp Map Location and Quest Guide

Take the contract from the notice board in Hierarch Square in Novigrad.
Go to the marketplace during the day and talk to the merchant Sylvester.
Follow the Imp's trail with the Witcher Senses.
Search the house at the end of the trail and read the letter. It reveals the thief is a Doppler.
Find a way to track the Doppler, then follow the scent of perfume with the Witcher Senses.
Confront the Doppler, catch it when it runs, and defeat it in the fight.
Spare it or kill it. Then return to the marketplace during the day and talk to Sylvester.

The Imp is the target of Contract: An Elusive Thief in Novigrad. The notice hangs on the board in Hierarch Square, and a merchant named Sylvester posted it. A mysterious creature keeps stealing from the stalls of the merchants' guild, and Sylvester wants it caught. The trail leads to a house, where a letter shows the thief is a Doppler. A scent of perfume then leads to the Doppler itself, which flees and must be chased down.

The ending depends on mercy. A spared Doppler pays in coin and hands over the Diagram: Gnomish Gwyhyr. Sylvester then pays a smaller reward, since there is no proof of the kill. A killed Doppler drops a pair of Mountain Folk Boots, and Sylvester pays in full.
