Uma is a cursed, misshapen creature. Geralt first sees him at Crow's Perch in Velen, where the Bloody Baron's men keep him as their jester. Uma turns out to be the key to finding Ciri. His story plays out in the quest Ugly Baby and ends at Kaer Morhen.
Lore
Uma washed ashore in Skellige in the same boat that had carried Ciri and her elven companion away. Donar, the jarl of Hindarsfjall, kept him for a time. Donar then sold him to a Novigrad merchant, who thought Uma would make a first-rate jester. Uma later ended up at the Baron's court at Crow's Perch.
Story
No one can talk with Uma. He seems to live in a small world of his own. Even so, Geralt knows Uma holds the key to finding Ciri. Geralt takes him from Crow's Perch and rides for Kaer Morhen.
On the way, Nilfgaardian soldiers stop them and bring them before Emperor Emhyr in Vizima. Emhyr had hoped Geralt would bring back someone other than a demented monster. Still, he accepts Uma as a solid lead in the search for his daughter. During the audience Yennefer comes up with a way to lift the curse. She sends Geralt on to Kaer Morhen.
At Kaer Morhen, Yennefer and Vesemir agree that Uma suffers from a powerful curse. They cannot agree on how to lift it. Vesemir first tries an old witcher method. The same method once freed the famous Swan of Poviss. It fails here, but it proves that Uma's body is a magic prison with another being trapped inside.
Yennefer's method is now the only option left, though it gives Uma little hope of survival. Geralt brews the Decoctions of the Grasses and gives Uma painful treatments, while Yennefer works her spell. The ritual succeeds beyond all hopes. The being trapped inside Uma is Avallac'h, a powerful elven Sage Geralt has met before. Avallac'h is close to death, but he still passes on the news everyone has waited for: Ciri is alive and hidden on the Isle of Mists.
