Avallac'h is an elf and a Sage of the Aen Elle, a powerful elven mage. He protects Ciri from the Wild Hunt and acts as her tutor. Geralt first follows him in Velen as the Mysterious Elf. Avallac'h is later found trapped in the cursed body of Uma, and he stays at the heart of the story until its end.
Lore
Geralt met Avallac'h years before the events of the game. Even then, the Sage showed an intense and unsettling interest in the Elder Blood and in its bearer, Ciri. He never explained why.
Avallac'h was the chief advisor to the previous king of the Aen Elle. That king's death set Avallac'h against the new ruler, Eredin. Since then the Sage has made it his mission to protect Ciri from Eredin's plans, whatever the cost. He became her tutor and mentor, and they travelled together for some time.
Story
When Avallac'h felt a curse taking hold, he hid Ciri from the Wild Hunt on the Isle of Mists. The curse then turned him into Uma. Yennefer and Geralt lift the curse at Kaer Morhen, but the treatment leaves Avallac'h close to death. He still manages to tell them where Ciri is. He also summons a magic light that guides Geralt to the isle.
Avallac'h plays a key part in the defense of Kaer Morhen. When the Wild Hunt attacks, Ciri's power breaks loose in a great outburst, and Avallac'h appears as she falls. After the battle he tells Geralt that only magic can bring final victory over Eredin. That means working with the Lodge of Sorceresses again. While the sorceresses leave for Novigrad, Avallac'h stays at Kaer Morhen to teach Ciri how to control her power. He finds her as stubborn a pupil as she is gifted.
Avallac'h then makes a plan to win over or remove Ge'els, one of Eredin's most powerful allies. For this he risks a dangerous journey through other worlds to Tir ná Lia, with Geralt at his side. A dreamer in Novigrad, Corinne Tilly, shows Ge'els a vision. Ge'els then points them to the Sunstone in Skellige.
Ciri tells Geralt that Avallac'h keeps a secret lair that even she was never allowed to see. Geralt, Yennefer and Ciri find a hidden laboratory there. In it Avallac'h studied the gene of Lara Dorren, the gene Ciri carries. They also meet a she-elf, his lover, who claims he secretly despises Ciri for her human blood. Avallac'h stays calm when he hears of the visit. He openly admits his interest in Lara's bloodline and in protecting her descendants.
At the war council before the final battle, Avallac'h argues with Ciri. He insists that she stay out of the fight. On Undvik he uses the Sunstone to draw the Wild Hunt into the trap. As he dies, Eredin claims that Avallac'h has tricked everyone and taken Ciri for himself. Avallac'h and Ciri have indeed vanished. It turns out he is no traitor. Ciri went with him of her own will, to stop the White Frost. She knew Geralt would never let her go. Avallac'h is waiting by the elven tower when Ciri steps inside.
Relationships
Ciri trusts Avallac'h. He has been her tutor for some time and has saved her life many times. Eredin is his enemy, since the death of the previous Aen Elle king set them against each other. The she-elf in his laboratory is his lover.
