KOLD MIRAGE is a side job in which V digs up a legend of the net. Deep in the Municipal Landfill in the Badlands, past the Medeski Fuel Station, an old freezer holds the body of Rache Bartmoss and his cyberdeck. V brings the deck to Nix, the netrunner of the Afterlife in Watson, and has to save his life when the deck fights back.
Story
The Freezer
The journal muses that there is always something interesting at the dump. A half dead merc with an experimental chip in their head, for example. Or, in this case, a freezer from 2020, a glimpse into the past.
The trail to the freezer starts in one of two ways. Some time after Spellbound, Nix texts V that he has decrypted the spellbook, and sends coordinates deep in the landfill. Or V reads the Notice of Expiration shard, which hints at the freezer's spot. After Ghost Town, simply walking up to the place starts the job too. Inside the freezer lies the corpse of Rache Bartmoss. After a short talk with Johnny, V scans the freezer and takes Bartmoss' cyberdeck.
Nix
At the Afterlife, Nix examines the deck and says Bartmoss was most likely killed by NetWatch. He offers to decrypt the data, now or later. At first he meets little resistance, but then he trips a hidden piece of malware, and his cyberware starts to fail. Johnny recognises it as a brain broiler and urges V to act fast.

Choices
Saving Nix
There are two ways to save him. Overriding the power panel on the wall by the door cuts the power and saves Nix, but wipes the data on the deck. Jacking into the computer next to Nix's desk and breaching the deck V's own way saves him and keeps the data, giving Nix full access to it.
Rewards
Completing KOLD MIRAGE rewards Five quickhacks.
Grateful for his life, Nix rewards V with five quickhacks, among them Memory Wipe, Reboot Optics, Short Circuit and Sonic Shock.
Tips
Breaching the computer by Nix's desk does not always work. Waiting until Nix has completely stopped moving before hacking it gives a better chance of success. The Notice of Expiration shard lies on a desk in the front office of the Revere Courier Services warehouse, on the ground floor by the car park, which V visits in the gig Many Ways to Skin a Cat.
Notes
- The Iconic pistol Plan B lies on the body of Dexter DeShawn, at the same spot as the freezer.
- The job is named after KOLD MIRAGE, a track from the album REMNANT by Lorn.
