Spellbound

Spellbound
Type Side Job
Giver Nix
District Little China
Region Watson
Location Afterlife
Previous Ghost Town
Next KOLD MIRAGE

Spellbound is the side job in which Nix, the netrunner of the Afterlife, sends V to buy a rare piece of old tech called The Book of Spells. It starts with a text from Nix after Rogue sends V to Panam in Ghost Town, or after KOLD MIRAGE. The seller, a netrunner called R3n0, waits at a restaurant in Charter Hill, and V can pay her, trick her or take the book by force.

Story

Nix

Johnny is curious. The journal says Nix is known as an expert on antique tech from before the great crash of the net: old decks, magnetic disks and the like. Some say it is all as useful as a typewriter or a record player. Johnny would not be so sure.

Nix wants V to buy The Book of Spells from a netrunner called R3n0, in case the exchange goes wrong. The errand sounds simple, but V suspects R3n0 may be a scammer.

R3n0

R3n0 waits at the bar of the Au Cabanon restaurant in Charter Hill, next to the Lele Park fast travel point, with a laptop. V can pay her price, and the deal goes ahead without trouble. A Corpo V can expose that she is stealing from her company and talk the price down. Or V can attack her, knock her out and breach her computer to find the coordinates of the stash.

The Book of Spells

The goods are hidden in a suitcase next to a vending machine in a shopping plaza across the street. Inside is The Book of Spells: a genuine Zetatech tablet. Johnny says it was cutting edge tech in his day, and he owned one. V can try to crack it before taking it back to Nix, which can bring money and crafting specs.

Back at the Afterlife, Nix pays V for the book. With high enough Intelligence, V can point out that it is worth far more, and Nix grudgingly pays a bonus.

Getting the Job

  1. Read Nix's text and talk to him in the back room of the Afterlife.
  2. Or visit the Smuggler's Cache site on the net to find R3n0's post, then call R3n0.

R3n0

  1. Go to the Au Cabanon bar on a footbridge in Charter Hill, next to the Lele Park fast travel point.
  2. Talk to R3n0 and buy the Book of Spells, or use the Corpo answer for a lower price.
  3. Or defeat R3n0, then breach her computer. With 9 Intelligence, steal some money as well. Open the files and read "Cache Coordinates".

Choices

How to Pay

Paying R3n0 keeps things peaceful. Attacking her saves the money but turns it into a fight. Scanning or jacking into her computer while she is there makes her hostile.

Nix's Price

Visiting the Smuggler's Cache site first changes the job: Nix pretends to have little interest in the book and does not offer to cover its price. Two Cool answers can then make him pay double.

Rewards

Completing Spellbound pays €$ 15,000, 206 experience and 308 Street Cred.

The job pays eddies, experience and Street Cred. Decrypting the book can give the legendary crafting spec for the System Reset quickhack.

Tips

The decryption puzzle is always the same, whatever the cyberdeck: a buffer of seven and a fixed layout. Not every reward can be taken at once, but the copy malware and the crafting specs can both be won with the sequence BD E9 BD 55 1C FF BD.

Notes

  • Decrypting the book starts KOLD MIRAGE right after this job. Otherwise KOLD MIRAGE starts a few days later.
  • Only one of Spellbound and KOLD MIRAGE can be active at a time, and whichever starts first must be finished before the other appears.
  • The job is named after a song by Siouxsie and the Banshees.
