Phantom of Night City is a cyberpsycho sighting for Regina Jones in Corpo Plaza, City Center. Tyger Claws are dying one by one, cut down with single, perfect sword strokes, and the survivors talk of a ghost in the tunnels. The killer is Norio Akuhara, a Tyger Claw swordsman who lost the two people he cared about most, and who will not believe one of those deaths was an accident.
Story
Ghosts
The journal is blunt: ghosts do not exist, and the dead can confirm it.
Someone Watching
On a body in the underpass, a shard records two Tyger Claws, Masaki Osawa and Takehiro Chiba. Someone killed Taki Kazo, his head taken off with a single slice, by a trained hand, not a ghost or a street punk with a cheap katana. First the accident with Julia, now this. It all began after their boss, Sota, was killed. Taki had said someone hid in a tunnel and watched him like a ghost. And Norio had not been at Julia's funeral. He said her death was no accident. Masaki thinks the poor man snapped after losing both people he cared about at once. Takehiro remembers Norio pressing old samurai legends on him, saying it was a matter of life and death, and that he could sense the sakki.
Norio and Julia
A shard on Norio himself holds a talk with Julia Lee, from before her death. Norio had been on a job with the new boss, who fought clumsily compared to Sota's mastery, and took cuts to finish some 6th Street gangers. Norio let him, to give him a chance to prove himself, though it ruined the shirt Julia gave him. Julia promised him a new shirt, for a new life away from the failing gang. A new shirt will come easier than a new life, Norio said, and he hoped he was wrong. Since he started working on his zen, his insight had grown much stronger.
An Air of Murder
Regina explains. "Sakki", the air of murder, is the uncanny skill of the old samurai masters at sensing coming danger, a skill the Tyger Claws clearly did not inherit. Some people, like Norio, need to know the cause behind everything. He searched high and low for Julia's killers, until he found them.
