Melee Weapons
Melee weapons are for fights at arm's length. They come in three kinds: blades, blunt weapons and throwables. Blades are fast and deadly. Blunt weapons hit hard and leave enemies alive. Knives and axes can be thrown, and they come back afterwards. Each kind uses its own attribute. Blades go with Reflexes, blunt weapons with Body, and thrown knives with Cool.
Combat
Pros
- Blades work well for assassinations and stealth kills, and also in open close combat.
- Blunt weapons are non-lethal. They knock enemies out instead of killing them, which helps in jobs that ask for a target alive.
- Throwable knives and axes return to the user after a short recovery. They return at once when the user is in melee range.
- Melee perks add finishers that restore Health, so a melee build heals itself in the fight.
- Some Iconic melee weapons hit through heavy Armor. Sasquatch's Hammer carries 75% armor penetration.
Cons
- A melee fighter has to get close before landing a hit, while ranged enemies keep shooting.
- Attacks use Stamina, so a long fight wears a melee build down.
- Heavy weapons such as Hammer and Sasquatch's Hammer reduce movement speed and jump height.
- Sasquatch's Hammer also blocks sprinting, dodging and dashing. It drains a lot of Stamina too.

Character Builds
Reflexes perks improve blades, Body perks improve blunt weapons, and Cool perks improve throwables.
- Blades. Lead And Steel cuts the Stamina cost of blade attacks and lets a blade block bullets. Bullet Deflect then sends blocked bullets back where the crosshair points. Finisher: Bladerunner adds blade attack speed and a finisher that restores 25% Health. Slaughterhouse makes every attack apply Bleeding.
- Blunt weapons. Wrecking Ball cuts the Stamina cost of blunt attacks. It also lets the user ram into enemies while sprinting and blocking. Quake adds attack speed and a ground slam that staggers nearby enemies. Fly Swatter cuts incoming ranged damage by 40% while blocking with a blunt weapon. Finisher: Savage Sling adds a blunt finisher that restores 20% Health.
- Throwables. Scorpion Sting makes crits and headshots with thrown weapons apply Poison. Juggler adds headshot damage with throwables. It also resets their cooldown after a kill by headshot, crit or Poison. After a thrown knife or axe is picked back up, Pay It Forward gives +200% damage to the next melee attack with it.
Melee cyberware helps a lot too. A Berserk turns the user into a melee-only fighter while it lasts. During that time, attacks cost no Stamina and attack speed goes up. Stabber adds crit chance with blades and throwables, and Microrotors add melee attack speed. Adrenaline Booster restores Stamina on every melee kill. Handle Wrap adds crit chance with throwables for a few seconds after equipping or throwing one. Among mods, Bleedout raises the crit chance of Bleeding damage from a blade.
Notes
- Nehan applies Bleeding with a throw. It causes hemorrhaging on an enemy already bleeding from Satori. Hemorrhaging drains the enemy's Health and restores the user's.
- Saburo Arasaka drops Nehan during The Heist. Satori leans against a seat in his AV on the rooftop landing pad.
- Errata waits at the forge inside the Electric Corporation Power Plant during Disasterpiece.
- Sasquatch's Hammer comes from the fight with Sasquatch in I Walk the Line.
- Herold Lowe at the EBM Petrochem Stadium in Dogtown sells most missed Iconic melee weapons.
- Jinchu-Maru is looted from Sandayu Oda in Play It Safe. Tsumetogi comes from Hiromi Sato or from its display stand in Pisces.
- Scalpel is the reward of Big in Japan.
- Baby Boomer adds crit chance with every attack in a row during a combo. Lina leaves it behind during Dazed and Confused.
- Cottonmouth lies on a coffee table in Fingers' clinic during The Space in Between.
- A throw with Fang cripples the target, so it cannot run. Close-combat attacks with Fang gain damage as they continue.
- Standard katanas carry 25% armor penetration. The Cut-O-Matic chainsword and the Electric Baton Beta and Gamma carry 50%.
- Black Unicorn and Gwynbleidd are GOG rewards that appear in the stash automatically.
- Mantis Blades, Gorilla Arms and Monowire are arm cyberware rather than melee weapons. A ripperdoc installs them.
