Something out in the fog stands a head taller than the rest, with glowing purple eyes. The Draugr Elite is the heavy unit of the Swamp: it has twice the health of a common Draugr and swings a two-handed blade for nearly sixty slash damage a hit. In a flooded crypt corridor, it is what ends an otherwise good run. It is rare enough that meeting one feels like an event, and common enough that you must plan for it before you set out.

Behaviour

Elites are melee only. Unlike the common rank they never carry a bow, and that shapes the whole encounter. Their single attack is a wide horizontal slash that arcs ninety degrees, reaches a little over two metres and comes every four seconds. It is slow enough to read but wide enough that stepping sideways rarely clears it. An unblocked hit staggers you outright, and the follow-up is what actually kills you. Like all undead they never sleep or retreat, and they wade through waist-deep water after you without slowing. They summon nothing, but they are almost never alone. Ordinary Draugr are usually already on you by the time the tall one pushes through, and most elite deaths happen exactly that way: locked into a parry rhythm with two shamblers while a sixty damage swing comes in from the side. A night spawn simply vanishes at dawn if you break away and leave it alone.

Where to Find It

Elites spawn in the deeper parts of the Swamp at night and despawn when the sun comes up, which makes a night crossing very different from a daytime one. They also hold rare fixed spawn points near the marsh's ruined towers and Draugr Villages. Less often, they emerge from body piles inside Sunken Crypts, swamp towers and Mountain Towers, which roll for a fresh spawn every few seconds until destroyed. One and two star versions exist, and a two star elite with six hundred health hitting for a hundred and sixteen a swing is a boss-grade problem in the wrong corridor. No boss kill gates them, but a player who meets one before iron is arriving early.

Where and When At Once How Often Stars
Middle of the Swamps during the night time, despawn at dawn 1 Rare No
Rare spawn point near Inverted Tower structures - One time Yes
Rarely from Body piles in Swamps, Sunken Crypts or Mountain towers 2 Every 6 seconds Yes

Strengths and Weaknesses

Leave the Fire Arrows in the chest: fire damage is halved here, and nothing else you own is. The cleanest kill exploits the one thing it lacks, a ranged attack. On open ground a Huntsman Bow and a steady backwards walk will kill one for free, and kiting is not cowardice when the alternative is trading hits with a two-handed sword. When you have to stand and fight, the parry is everything. The slash telegraphs clearly, a parry with an Iron Buckler staggers it hard, and a two-handed follow-up such as an atgeir or Battleaxe cashes that stagger in for most of its health. Do not trade blindly: fifty-eight slash gets through iron, and a starred one will kill you outright. Fight on dry ground where your dodge roll works and your stamina is not draining into swimming, clear the ordinary Draugr escort first where you can, and bring iron armour and a full food bar before you go looking for one on purpose.

Drops

It drops noticeably more Entrails than the common rank, plus a trophy worth the wall space in a hall.

Level Variants

A creature can spawn at one of three levels, shown as stars beside its name. Each level is rolled separately at spawn, so a two-star is rarer than a one-star. The difference is more than the numbers: a starred draugr elite is recoloured or larger, so you can see it coming.

Notes

  • Draugr, or Draug, are "the undead of Valheim", also called aptrganga or aptrgangr in Norse literature. Draugr live in their graves, often guarding the treasure buried with them in their burial mound.
  • From a Runestone: "Long ages ago, the world of Valheim was home to a race of proud and noble people. They built great towers that touched the clouds and delved deep into the earth for precious metals. But their pride was their undoing. They challenged the very gods and went to war against the Aesir and Vanir, destroying themselves completely. Great Odin leveled their cities and Loki consumed their mines in fire. Mighty Thor broke down their towers and Freya sowed their fields with salt tears. Now they are sunk many hundred of years deep. No song sing of their stories, and the earth has claimed their cities. But pride cannot be killed entirely and the warriors who fought in that final battle will not surrender until their bodies are dust and the dust long gone. They return as Draugr, unholy walkers in ancient armour, creatures of rust and despair. Break them, bury them, let them know they are dead."
