The Battleaxe is an axe in Valheim, dealing 70 slash and 40 chop. At 110 total damage it is 10th of the 15 axes, so it is a step on the ladder rather than the top of it.

How to Craft

Crafted at Forge, station level 2.
Costs 30x Ancient bark, 35x Iron, 4x Leather scraps at quality 1.
Materials can be found in the Swamp biome.

When to Use It

Early game. Iron comes out of Sunken Crypts in the Swamp, so this arrives once The Elder is down.

Upgrades

Upgraded 3 times after crafting, each level wanting the station built one step further up than the last. Every figure quoted elsewhere on this wiki is quality 1, so this is the ladder your own copy is somewhere on:

Properties

The first two-hander, and the cheapest stagger in the game. The secondary costs half a swing's stamina for half damage but 4x stagger in 0.84 seconds. Open with it, then run the primary into something that cannot move.

No damage penalty on a crowd. The two-handed primary does not split its damage between the enemies one swing catches, and it reaches 2.5 metres across a 90 degree arc. A Greydwarf pack takes it all.

The first hit is the slow one. 1.58 seconds to land, then 0.92 and 0.7 for the 2 after it, with triple damage between them. Starting the combo cold into a moving target is how the class gets its reputation for missing.

Notes

Chop damage applies to trees and not to creatures, which is why a tree falls to an axe and nothing else.
Which trees an axe can fell is part of its tier: stone and flint manage Beech, Fir and Pine, bronze and iron add Birch, Oak and the Ancient Tree, and only the Black metal axe and the Jotun Bane cut Yggdrasil shoots and Scorched trees.
The first hit of a two-handed combo is much the slowest at 1.58 seconds; the second and third take about 0.92 and 0.7 and carry triple damage between them.
