Travel On foot

The Mountain is every piece of land above 50 m: snow, bare rock, fir trees, and drakes circling the peaks. It is the first biome that makes you pay to get in. Freezing hits the moment you cross the treeline, and without frost resistance your health stops regenerating.

Locations

Mountains form anywhere the ground rises above 50 m, from roughly 600 m out. Height alone decides it, not distance from the centre, which is why mountains push up through forests and meadows everywhere. The world generator flattens peaks near spawn on purpose, so a mountain cannot form within 600 m of the centre.

Location Image What's Inside
Frost Cave Frost Cave Ice, crystal and cultist lairs above 100 m. Fenris hair, red jute, a Moder vegvisir, and shafts that will kill you if you miss the ledge.
Howling Cavern Howling Cavern Hildir's second dungeon. Geirrhafa holds her silver chest.
Mountain Tower Mountain Tower A ruined stone tower above 150 m. Two chests and a 63% chance of a Moder vegvisir.
Abandoned Cabin Abandoned Cabin A snowed-in log building. The chest is where onion seeds come from.
Drake Nest Drake Nest Rocks and ice around a glowing dragon egg, watched by up to three drakes. The egg comes back after eight hours.
Mountain Grave Mountain Grave A small stone ring. Dig the middle for bone fragments and a silver necklace.
Forge of Potential Forge of Potential One per world. Each idol spent on an item has a 65% chance to raise it one quality level; otherwise the item is destroyed.
Moder's Altar Moder's Altar High on a peak, between 150 m and 500 m. Three dragon eggs summon her.

Boss

Moder

You summon Moder high on a peak with 3 dragon eggs, taken from drake nests in the same mountain. She has 7,500 health, is weak to fire and immune to frost. She alternates between flying overhead dropping icicles and landing to bite.

She drops dragon tears, which build the artisan table. That unlocks the blast furnace, windmill, spinning wheel and stone oven, the entire Plains tier. Her power gives a permanent tailwind while you steer, +300 carry weight and +10% movement speed.

Hazards

  • Freezing applies everywhere, day and night. Health regeneration stops completely, stamina regeneration drops 60%, and you take a point of damage every second.
  • Frost resistance stops working while you are wet, so arriving straight from a swamp or a swim is lethal.
  • Blizzards run 17% of the time and cut visibility to almost nothing.
  • Frost cave shafts drop a long way, and bats are very good at luring you towards the edge.
  • Wolves spawn starred and in packs of up to six after dark, and fenrings only come out at night.
  • Stone golems look exactly like scenery until they stand up.

Lore

A dying party left a stone here: "We were twenty and now we are two." Ulf left one where he first saw the great drake, swearing never to come near the place again. Another says the worst of the beasts is the cold wind itself.

Astrid's stone is the one that matters. She woke to find Odin's words scattered on the ground, frozen into pebbles by the cold, and warmed them in her hands until she could hear them: "Slay the Forsaken. Chain their heads. I will come."

Notes

  • Altitude decides everything. Drakes, obsidian, drake nests and frost caves appear from 100 m, silver and stone golems from 120 m, and the towers from 150 m up.
  • If a peak has drakes and obsidian, that is your field test that it is tall enough to hold silver.
  • Dig out the ground under a silver vein, break one node, and the rest collapses and drops at once.
  • Obsidian and crystal can go through a portal. Silver ore cannot.
  • Dragon eggs weigh 200 each and respawn eight hours after you take them, so collect them in the same mountain as the altar.
  • Moder is immune to frost, so frostner is the wrong weapon for her, even though it is the biome's own.
