When the Swamp starts hitting you with poison instead of blades, Root Mask is the answer. You knot it together at a workbench from abomination root and Ancient Bark. It has 8 armour, or 14 fully upgraded. Worn with the rest of the Root Set, it adds up to 24 armour, which turns a 100-damage hit into 76.

How to Craft

You craft it at a level 2 Workbench from:

  • 10x Root: dropped by Abominations in the Swamp.
  • 10x Ancient Bark: chopped from Ancient Trees in the Swamp.
  • 4x Leather Scraps: dropped by Boars and Bats, and dug out of Muddy Scrap Piles.

When to Use It

Early game. Root drops from Abominations and Ancient Bark is chopped from Ancient Trees, both in the Swamp.

Upgrades

You can upgrade it 3 times after crafting, and each level needs the station built one step further than the last. Every other figure on this page is for quality 1, so this table shows the ladder your own copy sits on:

Quality Crafting Station Armor Durability Resources
1 Workbench (Level 2) 8 800
2 Workbench (Level 3) 10 900
3 Workbench (Level 4) 12 1000
4 Workbench (Level 5) 14 1100

Properties

Notes

  • Armor reduces physical, fire, frost and lightning damage, but it does nothing against poison or spirit damage.
  • Against a hit more than twice the armor value, armor simply takes its own value off the damage. Against weaker hits it blocks a growing share of the damage instead, and every extra point of armor adds as many survivable hits as the one before, so stacking armor never stops paying off.
  • The armor rating is the total of the helmet, chest, leg and cape armor worn, so going without a helmet throws away a large part of it.
