Bats are the least dangerous thing in the Mountain one at a time, and one of the most annoying the way they actually arrive: as a swarm pouring out of the dark. With ten hit points, almost any hit kills one. The problem is the dozen behind it, flapping at head height right where your swing wants to go. You first meet them in the caves under the snow, and again later when they come looking for your house.

Behaviour

They fly, and that is the whole difficulty. A bat circles, drops and lunges forward to bite for slash damage through a tight arc barely a metre and a half wide, then peels away and comes round again. Each bat only manages that about once every ten seconds, but in a swarm the gaps overlap until the biting is almost constant. Their flight is erratic and at or above head height, so a broad swing misses more often than it hits, and they will chase you out of a cave mouth and across open snow instead of breaking off. They do not call for help, mostly because they already arrive in numbers, and they never flee. Bats left over after a raid ends do not despawn on their own, and they will happily work their way through a pen of unattended tames while you are away.

Where to Find It

They live in the dark under the Mountain, not on its surface. They are a common spawn inside Frost Caves and the deeper howling caverns, hanging from the ceilings until something walks in underneath, and you will rarely meet one out on the open snowfields. The other place you meet them is at home. Once you have killed a bat and killed Bonemass, the raid called "You stirred the cauldron" unlocks and sends up to ten bats at your base for two minutes, whichever biome you built in. They are common wherever they spawn. A one-star variant has double the health and half again the damage, which still leaves it by far the weakest creature in the biome.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Almost anything kills a bat, but not everything kills a swarm before it has chewed a serious hole in you. Physical damage is halved against them, which sounds bad until you remember they only have ten hit points, so any real weapon still kills one per swing. What matters is hitting more than one at a time. A sweeping weapon such as an Atgeir, or any secondary attack with a wide arc, clears a cluster of them in one motion, where a sword picks them off one by one. Fire is their real weakness: a lit Torch in your off hand does steady damage on its own, and a Bonfire at a cave mouth thins them out without you swinging at all. Skip frost, which they ignore completely, and do not waste Silver Arrows on something that drops Leather Scraps. Blocking does little against damage this small. Put your back to a wall so they cannot circle behind you, and keep moving. A player geared for the Mountain is in no real danger from bats alone; the real risk is being nibbled to death while a Fenring or a Cultist has your attention.

  • It takes extra damage from Fire and Spirit.
  • It resists Blunt, Slash and Pierce.
  • It is immune to Frost and Poison.

Drops

A single bat is barely worth the swing: it drops Leather Scraps about half the time, and nothing else.

Level Variants

A creature can spawn at one of three levels, shown as stars next to its name. Each level is rolled separately at spawn, so a two-star is rarer than a one-star. The difference goes beyond the numbers: a starred bat has a different colour or is larger, so you can see it coming.

Notes

  • When the "You stirred the cauldron" event ends, any remaining bats do not despawn. Wandering bats can still attack after the event is over, which is especially dangerous for tamed animals.
