Stone and flint axes do nothing to an Ancient Tree, so Ancient Bark stays out of reach until a Bronze Axe comes off the Forge. You get it from Ancient Trees in the Swamp.

How to Get It

Ancient Trees are the tall grey trunks standing in the water and mud of the Swamp, and you need a Bronze Axe or better to bring one down. An Iron Axe reaches no new trees, but it cuts faster and lasts longer. Each tree drops a heavy pile, and you have to cut the trunk again where it lands, which is slow work with Draugr and Leeches in the water around you. Chests in the Sunken Crypts hold some too, so a crypt run can top up a load. The bark is heavy, so a cart over dry ground or a boat moored at the treeline saves several trips.

Notes

Unlike ordinary wood, Ancient Bark cannot be burned into Coal in a Charcoal Kiln.
