The Barghest is a Specter that takes the shape of a ghostly dog. Barghests stalk the roads of Toussaint at night, usually in packs.
Lore
Superstitious folk say barghests are the wrath of the gods, sent down on people who commit rotten deeds. Even if that were true, saints would have reason to fear them as much as sinners. Barghests attack both with the same fury.
Witchers rarely believe in gods, but they know barghests are real. In their view, a barghest is born of a curse or a build-up of ill will. It is always tied to a chain of tragic events from the past.
Preachers use the creatures as a warning. A sermon by the Reverend Yomen of Tretogor tells sinners to repent. It reminds them of the hideous barghests that once plagued the Outskirts of Vizima.
Behaviour
Like wolves, barghests are stronger in packs. They surround their prey, leap at it and tear it apart with their teeth. They are fast and agile, so they slip away from many blows aimed at them.
Weaknesses
Coat the silver sword with Specter Oil. Yrden slows a barghest down, and Axii also works on them. Moon Dust bombs are a strong choice against the pack. Fire hurts barghests as if they were flesh and blood, but they are immune to burning.
A barghest can charge in and blind its target for a moment. If its prey fights back too hard, it answers with a blast of ghostly fire. That fire can set the target ablaze.

Barghests haunt the tunnels under the Termes Palace Ruins in Toussaint, together with wraiths. They have to be cut down in Scavenger Hunt: Grandmaster Wolven Gear, which the blacksmith Lafargue in Beauclair can start.
A pack also appears in the treasure hunt The Curse of Carnarvon. On the forested slopes of Mount Gorgon, north of Castel Ravello Vineyard, the barghests guard a dead man. Once they are dead, his body holds the journal of Alistair Carnarvon, which starts the hunt.
