The Shrieker is a powerful Cockatrice, one of the Draconids. It lives in a cave east of Crow's Perch in Velen. It is a unique monster, hunted in a witcher contract with a suggested level of 8.
Lore
The people of Crow's Perch already lived in fear of the baron's mad moods. On top of that, they had a vicious monster to deal with. They gave it a plain country name: the shrieker. It mostly snatched cows and goats, but it would not turn down a man if it met one. In the end, the village decided to pay a witcher to get rid of it.
The beast turned out to be a particularly nasty cockatrice. The baron's men had failed to stop it, and that came as no surprise. They could not stand up to the deadly precision of its strikes. Each blow sliced open arteries and caused heavy bleeding that only the Swallow potion could stop. The men also did not know the two tricks that work against it. The first is to force it to the ground with a crossbow, a bomb or a Sign. The second is to dodge its charge by rolling under its outstretched wing.
For a while it seemed the villagers would have to live in the shadow of the beast and always watch the sky in fear. Then the witcher arrived and put an end to the shrieker for good.
Behaviour
Between hunts, the Shrieker rests in its cave. It hides in a high nook of the cave that no one can climb to.
Weaknesses
Coat the blade with Draconid Oil and keep Aard ready. The Shrieker is strong for its suggested level. It drops an axe that needs level 12, so many players wait until level 10 or even 12 before taking it on.
The Shrieker pecks hard at anything in front of it. Its front attacks start fast and stay dangerous for a long moment, so they are hard to dodge. It swipes with its wings at anyone standing to its side. In the air, it dive-bombs its target.
Its back is the weak spot. The Shrieker has no attack that reaches behind it. Stay at its back as much as possible and the fight becomes much easier.
Shrieker Map Location and Quest Guide
- Read the contract on the notice board in Crow's Perch.
- Talk to the man who posted the contract.
- Talk to the witness of the shrieker's attack.
- Investigate the site of the attack east of Crow's Perch with the Witcher Senses.
- Follow the blood trail to the monster's lair in the cave.
- Find the Shrieker with the Witcher Senses and drive it out with a Samum, Grapeshot or Dancing Star bomb.
- Kill the Shrieker when it comes out to fight.
- Take a trophy from the Shrieker and return to Crow's Perch for the reward.

The Shrieker is the target of Contract: Shrieker in Velen. The contract hangs on the notice board in Crow's Perch. A witness to the attack can tell a little more about the monster.
The trail starts at the site of the attack. A blood trail leads to the monster's lair. A bomb is needed to drive the Shrieker out of its nook. A Samum, Grapeshot or Dancing Star bomb all work. The Shrieker drops a Cockatrice Trophy and the Dwarven Axe.
