The Cockatrice is one of the Draconids. It is small next to a Griffin or a Manticore, but it can easily kill anyone who meets it in a dark corridor. One nests near Fornhala on Ard Skellig, in Skellige.
Lore
A peasant from Pindal named Jethro opens the bestiary entry with a sad story. Jethro once kept a fine herd of cows. Then a Cockatrice settled nearby. Now all that is left is dried dung in an empty field.
Foolish superstition claims that a Cockatrice can kill with a glance, like a Basilisk. That is nonsense. Its gaze is no more dangerous than that of an angry goose. The real danger is its sharp beak and its long tail, which it whips with deadly effect.
Behaviour
Cockatrices thrive in dark places. They nest in caves, abandoned ruins, cobwebbed dungeons and old cellars. A Cockatrice never shies away from a straight fight. It strikes furiously with its wings and tail to wear its foe down. Its beak aims with deadly precision at bare flesh and vital organs, and it leaves bleeding, life-threatening wounds.
Weaknesses
Coat the silver sword with Draconid Oil. Grapeshot works very well, because its shrapnel easily pierces the delicate wings. Aard is the Sign to use, and Igni can set a Cockatrice on fire.
A Cockatrice fights much like a Griffin. It takes to the air and swoops down at its target. Roll away from its attacks instead of standing to trade blows. Aard and Grapeshot both help bring it down and keep it on the ground, where it can be hit. On the ground it turns to beak, tail and wings, so keep rolling clear of each strike.
