Type Side Character
Affiliation Arasaka

Anders Hellman is Arasaka's leading bioengineer, an expert in neural networks with many groundbreaking patents to his name. As director of the Relic project, he used the source code of Soulkiller to build a chip that can communicate with copied minds. He has a high opinion of himself and believes he cannot be replaced. After the Relic is stolen, he flees Arasaka, and V must find him to learn how to survive.

Biography

The Scientist

Hellman is one of the pillars of Arasaka's research and knows the Arasaka family well. When Yorinobu steals the Relic prototype, Hellman warns him that the chip is not ready and that he should speak to Saburo or to Hellman before using it. Yorinobu ignores him. Hellman then tells Saburo about the theft, which brings Saburo and Hanako to Night City. Fearing for his own skin, he begins talks with Kang Tao.

The Defection

Hellman deserts Arasaka for Kang Tao, but Rogue learns of his escape. V and Panam Palmer bring down the AV carrying him over the Badlands and capture him at a gas station. At the Sunset Motel, Hellman first mistakes V for an agent of a rival company and offers his loyalty for sale.

When V explains that Johnny Silverhand's mind is killing V, Hellman admits that the chip never left the testing stage. The prototype was built at Saburo's own request to install a copied mind into a new body. He examines V and gives the grim news: V's brain can no longer work without the chip. The only advice he has is a hospice to ease the end. When V refuses, he offers to help if V takes him somewhere safe. Takemura then arrives and questions him about Yorinobu.

Saburo Arasaka ordered the Relic prototype. Yorinobu Arasaka stole it against his advice. Hanako Arasaka knows him well and uses him in the final act. Goro Takemura despises him. Kang Tao is the company he tries to join.

In the Arasaka ending, Hellman comes with Takemura to rescue Hanako. He warns Takemura that Johnny's mind is affecting V, and Takemura threatens him for the insult. After the board meeting, Hellman takes V to the Arasaka Orbital Station for treatment. There he tells V the operation failed and V has only months to live, and offers a contract with the Secure Your Soul programme.

Notes

After Life During Wartime, V can call Hellman with questions about the Relic.
