Kang Tao is a Chinese company and one of the world's largest weapons makers. For years it has grown into a worthy rival of Arasaka by bringing some of the most advanced technology the market has ever seen. Its guns and gear serve both armies and private forces, and it leads the world in smart weapons, which lock onto their targets by themselves. In that niche it has no equal.
History
Taiwan
Kang Tao began in Taiwan, which had become a centre of manufacturing. It grew into a giant among the island's companies and, unlike most of them, kept its independence instead of selling out to Japanese business.
The New Kang Tao
Asia suffered greatly from war and unrest after the corporate wars, and China used its years of rebuilding as a time of opportunity. Kang Tao was rebuilt as a Chinese company under a former army colonel. Thanks to bold choices and government backing, it rose to the top of the arms trade at great speed and has since become the leading weapons exporter in Asia.
At the time of the game, an explosion at one of its refineries in China has killed many people. Official reports cleared the company of blame, but many still hold it responsible. Kang Tao has also shown interest in buying Pacifica. The city council answered that it would sell the district cheaply if Kang Tao cleared it of crime.
Way of Life
Kang Tao is aggressive and secretive. Its ties to the Chinese government have kept it out of trouble, and most nations treat it as a megacorporation worth dealing with, but its relations with other corporations are strained. It has a reputation for stealing research from its rivals and for carelessness that has cost thousands of lives. It manages to keep many of its darkest operations hidden.
The company is counted among the best employers in Night City. Staff receive gold Trauma Team cover, but they must also sign a long pledge of loyalty to the company.
Business
Kang Tao makes weapons for both armies and private forces. Its smart pistols, rifles and shotguns are among the best on the market; even Trauma Team arms its teams with them. Gossip says its first smart pistol was designed by an engineer taken from Arasaka. The company is also moving into the mercenary and security markets.
Jobs
Anders Hellman flees Arasaka for Kang Tao, and Panam Palmer brings down the Kang Tao AV carrying him in Life During Wartime. Kang Tao drones attack along the way.
