Black Steel In The Hour of Chaos is the Phantom Liberty main job on Solomon Reed's path, after V sides with Reed in Firestarter. MaxTac has captured Songbird, and V and Reed plan to ambush the MaxTac convoy that carries her. The ambush takes place on a skybridge in Pacifica, with the help of the 6th Street gang.

Story

Things Fall Apart

Johnny does not like where things are heading. In the journal he lists the damage: Alex is dead, MaxTac has Songbird, and Reed still thinks he has everything under control. To Johnny, the rescue plan proves that Reed has lost the thread. He grants Reed one thing: he never gives up and keeps pushing until he gets his way. Whether that is the key to success remains to be seen, as long as they do not end up in Los Padres, the prison for cyberpsychos, first.

The Convoy

To plan the ambush, V needs intel on the MaxTac convoy. V calls in a favour from a netrunner contact. Which netrunners V can ask depends on the side jobs done earlier in the game. If none of them can help, V can pay Mr. Hands for his netrunner, Yoko Tsuru, who gets the job done within hours and adds a request: send Mr. Hands the coordinates of the ambush.

The Ambush

With the data in hand, V meets Reed and Will Gunner, the leader of 6th Street, in an abandoned hotel in Pacifica that overlooks a skybridge. Before the convoy arrives, a 6th Street soldier goes over the plan. V chooses whether to set up turrets or mines, and picks one of three starting positions.

When the convoy comes, V and Reed first take out the NCPD escort, then a squad of four MaxTac officers. In the chaos, Songbird escapes in the MaxTac truck. Following its path leads V to a hidden, abandoned facility underground. The hunt continues in Somewhat Damaged.

Black Steel In The Hour of Chaos Walkthrough

The Intel

  1. Call a netrunner contact for intel on the MaxTac convoy.
  2. Or call Mr. Hands and pay him for his netrunner Yoko Tsuru, then wait for the data.
  3. Talk to Johnny if desired.

The Hotel

  1. Meet Reed and Will Gunner in the abandoned hotel overlooking the skybridge.
  2. Send Mr. Hands the coordinates of the ambush site if he asked for them.
  3. Listen to the 6th Street soldier go over the plan.
  4. Choose turrets or mines, and choose one of the three starting positions.

The Ambush

  1. Eliminate the NCPD escort when the convoy arrives.
  2. Defeat the squad of four MaxTac officers.
  3. Check on Reed and talk to him if desired.
  4. Follow the path of the escaping MaxTac truck to the underground facility.

Choices

The netrunner who supplies the intel depends on earlier side jobs, with Mr. Hands's netrunner as a paid backup. The defences for the ambush, turrets or mines, and the starting position are V's choice.

Rewards

Completing Black Steel In The Hour of Chaos rewards (missable).

Tips

MaxTac officers are among the toughest enemies in the game. Pick a starting position with good cover, and let the turrets or mines thin out the convoy before the MaxTac squad joins the fight.
