Never Fade Away is the main job inside Transmission in which V relives Johnny Silverhand's memory of losing Alt Cunningham. While Brigitte connects V to the Voodoo Boys' subnet, Johnny drags V into the night Arasaka took Alt. V plays as Johnny from his band's last show to the failed rescue inside the old Arasaka Tower.
Story
Welcome to My Nightmares
In the journal, Johnny asks V a question. Does V have nightmares, the kind that come back night after night so that no detail is ever forgotten, the kind where breathing is hard because V knows what comes next? He knows V does. And so he invites V into his own.
The Show
The memory opens with Johnny walking on stage and grabbing the microphone. Scenes of the Samurai show flash past, ending with Johnny firing his pistol. Off stage, Kerry Eurodyne turns on Johnny for being reckless. Samurai is not just Johnny's band, Kerry says, and it is not a solo act. Johnny shoves him aside, says he is the only one with a vision for the band, and storms into the dressing room looking for drugs.
Alt
Alt Cunningham, Johnny's girlfriend, waits in the dressing room. After an intimate moment, she tells him she is done with Samurai and what it stands for. She is leaving, but did not want to vanish without a word. Johnny lashes out, calling her and Kerry cowards who fear Arasaka, and claims he is the only one who will stand up to the corporation.
Alt leaves first. Johnny catches up with her in the back alley and tries to make amends. Then a group of thugs closes in. Johnny tells Alt to run and fires a few shots, but a thug with mantis blades cuts him down. The last thing he sees is Alt being dragged into a van.
The Ripperdoc
Johnny is close to death when Lyle Thompson, a media who was due to meet Alt that night, finds him. Lyle takes him to Milt Nauman, a ripperdoc and old friend, who spends hours putting Johnny back together. Johnny suspects Arasaka. Lyle agrees that it fits: Alt was working on software that Arasaka wanted.
The Atlantis
They drive to the Atlantis, a club where Johnny hopes to find Rogue, his former lover and a solo. Lyle waits in the car. Inside, Johnny gets past the doorman on the upper floor and finds Rogue drinking with Santiago, a nomad, while they wait for a client who never shows. Johnny asks them to help him raid Arasaka Tower and save Alt, and both agree.
Moments later, Arasaka troops storm the club. Johnny, Rogue and Santiago fight their way out and meet Lyle outside. They escape in Johnny's Porsche, shake off the pursuers, and plan the raid, with a riot in front of the tower as a diversion.
Arasaka Tower
Inside the tower, they fight through Arasaka soldiers to the mainframe, guarded by a skilled Arasaka agent named Akira. Past him, they find the room where Alt is kept. In his rage, Johnny shoots Toshiro, Alt's handler, and pulls Alt out of the system too early. The link between her mind and her body breaks. Grieving and furious, Johnny turns on Lyle, who has been filming everything, and almost beats him to death until Rogue stops him. Rogue confirms that Alt is gone, and V is pulled back to Rezo Agwe.

Choices
The talk with Alt in the dressing room shapes how she treats Johnny later. Harsh answers, such as telling her to get out or mocking her, make her colder towards him in later jobs. A kinder talk lets Johnny walk her home through the alley. The rest of the memory plays out the same way.
Rewards
The Virtual Jumpsuit, a piece of clothing, is obtained right after this job.
Notes
- The memory does not match what really happened that night. It is Johnny's version of events.
- Several characters from the tabletop game's sourcebooks can be met and talked to at the Atlantis.
