New Dawn Fades is the epilogue of the ending known as Temperance, in which Johnny Silverhand keeps V's body. It follows the raid with Rogue, the raid with the Aldecaldos or the secret ending, when Johnny crosses the bridge at Mikoshi. Johnny wakes up in a small flat in West Wind Estate, Pacifica, settles his debts to the dead and leaves Night City by bus.

Story

A Second Life

The journal is Johnny's farewell to V. Every story has an end, and he never thought V's would mean anything but his own end too. Instead, he is still alive and kicking, for the first time in decades. If V is out there somewhere, and he thinks V is, he asks V to take a look at him now.

Johnny wakes up in a flat at the West Wind Apartments and is still getting used to his new life. An automatic message from the North Oak Columbarium reminds him to pay for an order before it is cancelled. If Rogue died in the raid, he picks up her gun, Pride, and apologises for getting her killed. He takes a bus ticket and decides to visit his two friends at the columbarium, with a ride from a kid named Steve.

Steve

Steve Sanchez is a boy from the building whom Johnny has befriended. He has a bruise around his eye, because his father hit him for not waking him in time for work. Johnny can comfort him, or offer his alarm clock. Steve admits his guitar playing is going badly, and Johnny can tell him he will get there, or that technique matters less than finding his own flow. Outside, Steve's father, Henry, catches them and turns on Steve for taking his car keys. Johnny can talk him down calmly or stand up to him, and Henry lets them go.

Time Machine

On the drive to the music store Time Machine, Steve talks about Kerry Eurodyne and a rumour that Kerry used Johnny's death to get famous. Johnny brushes off the media and praises Kerry as a musician. Steve dreams of becoming a musician, and Johnny warns him about the critics, the pressure and the crazy lifestyle, telling him to have a backup plan, and above all to write songs and practise.

At Time Machine, Johnny asks the owner for an electric six string and pulls apart three guitars on the wall. Wanting a real instrument, he is taken to the back room, where vintage guitars hang, among them a DeLuze Orphean and a Tenzor Paradize. Johnny tries one out, and Steve is amazed: nobody he knows plays like Silverhand, who taught himself and made up his own style. Johnny lets Steve play while they talk about rebels and saying what one thinks, and then pays for the guitar.

The Columbarium

On the radio, the news says that Yorinobu has walked out of peace talks with Militech, and war may be coming. At the North Oak Columbarium, Johnny pays for two niches, one for Rogue and one for V. In V's, he places the bullet pendant, thanking V for everything. The epitaph reads "Dreamer". In Rogue's, he places her gun, Pride. Her epitaph reads "Queen of the Afterlife".

The Bus

Outside, Johnny can take the cigarette from Steve's hand, saying he gave it all up and Steve should too. He boards a bus out of Night City. Steve runs after it, shouting that Johnny left the guitar behind. Johnny tells him to keep it, takes off his sunglasses and watches the city slip away.

Cross the bridge at Mikoshi to let Johnny keep the body.
Read the notifications from the automated delivery system.
Pick up the bus ticket and take the bag.
Leave the apartment.
Call Steve on the intercom and talk to him.
Follow Steve and talk to his father.
Get in the car and go to Time Machine.
Enter the store and talk to the owner.
Choose a guitar and pay for it.
Go back to the car and drive to the columbarium.
Check the columbarium layout and find the niches.
Leave the mementos.
Leave the columbarium and talk to Steve.
Get on the bus.

Choices

Getting Here

On Rogue's path, Johnny must say he is not ready to die yet, then cross the bridge. On Panam's path, V decides that the body should belong to Johnny, then he crosses the bridge.

Along the Way

Johnny's answers to Steve and to Henry change the dialogue, as does his choice of guitar at Time Machine. The ending is always the bus out of Night City.
