The Wraiths are a gang of outcast nomads that rules the roads around Night City. They are Raffen Shiv: people thrown out of nomad families for terrible crimes. While most nomads live on the edge of the law, the Wraiths live completely outside it. They are well organised, effective and willing to do anything, because, like all Raffen Shiv, they have nothing left to lose.
History
The Old Wraiths
In the days of Johnny Silverhand, the Wraiths were the largest outcast nomad group in North America. They travelled mostly at night and preyed on the sleeping and the unwary. Their leader then, Dogkiller, was said to wear clothes made of human skin.
The Badlands
Little is known of where the gang came from, except that it is one of many nomad-born gangs of the West Coast, made up of exiles from the nomad nations. Today the Wraiths are one of the two great nomad groups of the Badlands. They have a long history of war with the other, the Aldecaldos, and their capture of Saul Bright sets off one of the key chapters of Panam Palmer's story.
Way of Life
The nomad codes once listed reasons for throwing someone out of a family, such as refusing to share with the clan. These days nomads are more often expelled for murder, rape, trafficking people, poisoning the water or betraying the clan. Once cast out, most keep living on the road. They gather into larger groups, but nobody would call those groups families, not even as a joke.
The Wraiths dress in black and blue shades that give them a ghostly look. They raid convoys with modified guns and rocket launchers, and they drive heavily modified cars and bikes with names like the Ghoul, the Revenant and the Wendigo. They favour reflex boosters and pain editors. To city people they look like just another nomad tribe, but they are closer to outright mercs.
Business
Most of the Wraiths' money comes from raids on villages, small nomad groups and badly guarded corporate convoys, and they take special pleasure in attacking other nomad camps. They sometimes take transport jobs in the city, but they often break the deal and keep the cargo, or hold the passengers for ransom. Like the Scavengers, they also kidnap people and sell their organs and chrome.
