Golden Hippopotamus is a great boss in Elden Ring . It is part of the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion.
The Golden Hippopotamus is a giant golden beast that guards the main gate plaza of the Shadow Keep . It charges with its jaws wide open and tries to swallow the player whole. In its second phase thorny fur bristles from its back and it rolls across the arena. Defeating it opens the way deeper into the keep and yields two Scadutree Fragments.
Lore The Golden Hippopotamus is a huge beast with a golden hide and a vast mouth. It is far larger than the common hippopotami of the Realm of Shadow . Thorn-like fur can rise along its back.
Hippopotami live near the waters of the Realm of Shadow. The thorny fur of this one is a vestige of the vitality of the Crucible, which flourished in the age before the land was enshrouded in shadow.
Where to find Golden Hippopotamus Location? Shadow Keep, at the foot of the great statue of Marika just inside the main gate (Shadow Keep Main Gate Site of Grace)

Phases Phase 1: the hippo charges, bites and slams its head and belly.
Phase 2: thorny fur rises on its back, it adds holy damage and rolls around the arena. Attacks Fanged Rush: it charges with jaws open and tries to swallow the player, slamming its head down several times. Sprinting to its side at an angle and rolling away from the head avoids it.
Head slam: it slams its head down and can throw the player off balance. Rolling toward its body avoids it.
Belly Slam: it rears onto its legs and slams its belly after a delay. A roll to either side opens a hit on its head.
Thorn roll: in phase two it rolls across the arena with bristling thorns. Long recovery follows.
Charging grab: a lunging grab with a long recovery after a miss. Tactics Summon Redmane Freyja or the Hornsent if their signs appear, or a spirit such as the Mimic Tear Ashes .
Dodge earlier than usual, because its bites cover more ground than they appear to.
Stay close and move toward its body, away from its head.
Use heavy attacks to break its stance, then strike its head.
Wear physical and holy protection, such as the Dragoncrest Greatshield and Haligdrake Talismans.
Use fire, lightning or slash damage. Best Builds Fire weapon The Blasphemous Blade deals fire, one of its weaknesses.
Ancient dragon lightning Its long recovery windows leave time for a fully charged Ancient Dragons' Lightning Strike .
Lion's Claw skills Lion's Claw and Savage Lion's Claw deal heavy stance damage.
