The Butcher Knife never sees combat. Two sticks and a little tin at the forge buy you the only blade that can put down your own tame animals, and it does nothing at all to anything wild. It has 2 block armour. Its materials come from the Black Forest, and it is made at a Forge. It is the only item in the game that can damage a tamed creature, and the only one that cannot damage anything else. That makes it a tool for culling your own Boar without switching friendly fire on.

How to Craft

It is made at a level 1 Forge from:

Wood Wood All biomes - spawn Wood
Tin Tin Black Forest Smelter spawn Tin

When to Use It

It is an early-game tool. It needs Black Forest materials, so it comes after Eikthyr and the Antler Pickaxe.

Properties

It is not a weapon. It is the only thing in the game that can hurt a tamed animal, and that is its entire purpose: culling your own Boar or Wolves without turning friendly fire on and risking everything else you have tamed.

It cannot hurt anything else either. A wild Greydwarf takes nothing from it, so it is no backup blade in any sense. It has no secondary attack.

That is why it reads as 1000 damage. The figure exists to kill a penned animal in one stroke, not to describe a weapon. It does not appear in the class table as damage, because against every creature in the game except your own livestock it deals zero.

Notes

Each hit deals 1000 damage, so any tamed animal dies in a single stroke.
