| Tier | 2 |
| Distance | 500 to 8,000 m |
| Boss | The Elder |
| Metal | Copper and tin |
| Dungeon | Burial Chamber |
| Weather | Clear, 87% |
| Threat | Greydwarf packs after dark |
| Travel | On foot |
The Black Forest is the ring of land just outside the Meadows and the first biome that fights back. Pine and Fir trees grow thick enough to block out the midday sun, and Blueberry bushes and blue-glowing Thistle cover the ground. Copper sits half-buried in the hills and Tin glints along the shore. Greydwarves chatter constantly, and something heavy is usually moving through the trees.
Locations
It stretches from 500 m out to 8,000 m, forming the ring around the Meadows, and it is meant to be your second biome. Two things in it depend on distance: Trolls and Greydwarf Brutes only spawn with stars past 2,000 m, and Haldor only appears from 1,500 m out.
| Location | Image | What's Inside |
|---|---|---|
| Burial Chamber | The first dungeon: a pitch dark maze of twenty to forty rooms. Surtling cores, skeletons, ghosts and the occasional Elder vegvisir. | |
| Troll Cave | A rock mouth holding one troll. Nothing else can get in, so a cleared cave is the safest room in the game. | |
| Bear Cave | A cave with a sleeping bear and about ten yellow mushrooms. | |
| Smouldering Tomb | One of Hildir's three dungeons, lit by two iron torches. Brenna guards her brass chest. | |
| Abandoned Outpost | Ruined stone towers with crows circling. Greydwarves, skeletons, chests and a 30% chance of an Elder vegvisir. | |
| Greydwarf Nest | A spawner that never stops. Left alive it is a wood, stone, resin and eye farm. | |
| The Elder's Altar | An ancient bowl. Three ancient seeds summon him. | |
| Haldor's Camp | A wagon pulled by a lox, at least 1,500 m from the centre. Haldor trades here. | |
| Big Rock Clearing | One per world. A glowing rock ringed by twenty-two mysterious rocks. |
Boss
The Elder is summoned at an ancient bowl with 3 Ancient Seeds, which drop from Greydwarf Brutes and Greydwarf Nests. He has 2,500 health and is very weak to fire. He attacks by throwing vines and filling the ground around you with grasping roots.
He drops the Swamp Key, which opens every Sunken Crypt in the world and with it the whole iron tier. His power gives +30% health regeneration and +60% chop and pickaxe damage.

Hazards
- At night the spawner runs every minute at full chance, sending up to six Greydwarves in groups of three and four, with Shamans healing them.
- A Shaman's poison cone cannot be blocked.
- Trolls hit for 60 to 70 damage and smash terrain and buildings as easily as trees.
- A Bear ambushes you with 800 health, but it will not come within 3 m of fire.
- Ghosts shrug off every physical damage type you have at this tier.
- Copper deposits reach down to the dig limit, so mining one out leaves a pit you can fall into.
Lore
The Black Forest runestones are warnings: "Beware the deep trees, beware the true dark." One calls The Elder the Old One, once a shoot of Yggdrasil itself, banished for his pride, whose roots run deep. Another says the Greydwarves are a murderer's rotting soul that draws rock, wood and moss to itself and walks at night, and it advises carrying a Torch.
One stone counts the exiles and says the people brought here are not the first men in this land, pointing to the halls beneath the ground.
Notes
- A Troll does enough terrain damage to shatter Copper and Tin deposits and fell Oak and Birch trees, which lets you make Bronze before Eikthyr.
- A Greydwarf Nest left alive is an endless farm for Wood, Stone, Resin and Greydwarf Eyes. A roof over a 4 m radius shuts one off.
- Enemies killed inside a Burial Chamber or a Troll Cave never respawn, but the Yellow Mushrooms grow back after four hours.
- A cleared Troll Cave is the safest storage in the early game, because nothing can get in.
- Copper is found inland in the hills and Tin on the coast, so a boat and a route along the shore are the fastest way to farm Tin.
- Carrot Seeds are picked here and never regrow in the wild, so plant your first handful straight away.
