Almost every recipe in Valheim starts with Wood, and you can chop it in every biome. Every tree type gives normal Wood when you cut it, alongside its own wood such as Finewood or Corewood. Bushes give Wood too, and the Greydwarves drop it when they die.

What It Is For

Wood burns in fires and turns into Coal in a Charcoal Kiln.


How to Get It

A Stone Axe, the first tool most players build, takes down Beech, Fir and Pine along with every sapling and bush, so nothing about wood is gated beyond your first few minutes ashore. A felled trunk needs a second round of chopping where it lies before it gives up its logs. Greydwarves drop wood when killed, which makes a nest near camp a slower but safer substitute for a forest. Wood goes through portals, so a logging camp on the far side of the map is as good as one behind the house.
