Above the snow line, the Wolf is the reason the Mountain kills players who thought they were prepared. Eighty health makes any single wolf trivial, but they come in packs, and at night six can be out at once. At 70 slash per bite from three directions, they go through an underdressed Viking far faster than the cold does. Tame one, and all of that arithmetic starts working in your favour instead.
Behaviour
Wolves hunt in groups and commit completely. Once one spots you, it sprints the whole distance and works through a sequence of three bites: two side swings and a forward lunge. Each deals 70 slash in a narrow arc about two metres deep, on a five second cooldown. Then the wolf backs off a pace and comes straight back in. That brief retreat after the third attack is the only breathing room the whole fight offers. Wolves do not sleep and do not flee. None of them summons anything, but a pack that is already together will all lock onto the same target at once, which is exactly why one wolf means a scratch and four can mean a death. They pick fights with anything they read as prey, even Serpents at the shoreline, and they multiply unchecked in any area where kills keep dropping meat on the ground. Once tamed, they stop retaliating against you entirely, follow you with real persistence and will even come through a Portal at your heels.
Where to Find It
Wolves live in the interior of the Mountain, on the high snowfield rather than the tree line, and their numbers swing hard with the clock. By day, three can be out at once, the spawn is rated common, and none of them carry stars. At night the cap rises to six, the spawn rate goes to very common, and starred wolves become possible. That is where the 2-star packs that punch through iron come from, and those night wolves despawn at dawn if you last that long. Beyond the natural spawns, killing Bonemass unlocks the "You are being hunted..." raid. It brings two minutes of wolves in the Mountain or the Plains, on a timer that keeps running whether you stand and fight or leave the area entirely. The last place to get wolves is your own pen. A tamed pair will breed when fed and content, and the cubs grow into ordinary wolves in about fifty minutes.
| Where and When | At Once | How Often | Stars |
|---|---|---|---|
| Middle of the Mountains during the daytime | 3 | Common | No |
| Middle of the Mountains during the nighttime, despawn at dawn | 6 | Very common | Yes |
| From breeding | 4, within 10 meters | - | Inherited from the parent |
| During "You are being hunted" event after defeating Bonemass | 6 | Very common | No |
Strengths and Weaknesses
Nothing in a wolf's profile lets you cheat, so bring whatever hits hardest. Only spirit is wasted, which makes Silver's bonus a non-factor and leaves Frostner doing its work with the other two thirds of its damage. The shield decides the fight. Wolves attack in a readable run of three bites and they stagger properly, so a well-timed parry with an Iron Buckler or a Silver Shield flips the exchange, and one follow-up swing kills at eighty health. Trying to out-swing a pack without blocking is how the Mountain earns its reputation. Position matters as much as gear: fight with rock at your back or on a slope they have to climb, and never let three of them fan out around you. At range, a Huntsman Bow thins the pack before it arrives, and Fire Arrows into a bunched group work well because not one of them resists fire. Full iron plus frost resistance is the honest minimum. Wolf Armor, made from the pack that killed you last week, makes the whole biome routine.
- Wolves are immune to Spirit damage.
Drops
The whole Mountain tier is built from pelts and fangs. They go into Wolf Armor, capes and Frost Resistance Mead, and the meat cooks into some of the best food of the era.
| Item | Image | Base | 1 Star | 2 Star |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wolf fang | 40% | 2 (80%) | 4 | |
| Wolf meat | 1 | 2 | 4 | |
| Wolf pelt | 1 | 2 | 4 | |

Level Variants
A creature can spawn at one of three levels, shown as stars beside its name. Each level is rolled separately at spawn, so a two-star is rarer than a one-star. The difference goes beyond the numbers: a starred wolf is recoloured or larger, so you can see it coming.
| Level | Stars | Image | Health | Damage | Drops |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | - | 80 | 100% | x1 | |
| 2 | ⭐ | 160 | 150% | x2 | |
| 3 | ⭐⭐ | 240 | 200% | x4 |
Notes
- A wolf's size depends on its stars. A 2-star wolf is much larger than a 0-star wolf.
- You can move wolves by boat. Build a dock with a plank directly over the boat's deck, and keep it as flat as possible, since wolves don't like using staircases. Once the wolf is over the boat, break the planks it is standing on to drop it onto the deck.
- Wolves will try to fight Serpents.
- Wolves placed on top of a boat take collision damage from fish, rocks and other unknown entities. It can happen at any time and at any boat speed, and when it does, it kills the Wolf instantly. Boars suffer the same.
- Wolves roaming an area where enemies drop meat can sustain their numbers and even multiply at an alarming rate. That keeps the area very safe, but overpopulation can become a problem: they run into players and carts, attack structures, make noise and cause stutter on lower end systems.
- Tamed wolves set to follow you stay where they are when you log out or portal beyond their detection range, however long you are away. They start following you again when you portal or log back in, so you do not have to set them to follow again by hand.
