Axes

Early Axes

Axes are the only weapon class in the game that can fell a tree, so the axe you carry also decides which tier of wood you can chop.

Combat

Pros

  • It is your woodcutting tool, so the axe on your belt is a second weapon you were carrying anyway. On a tree the swing is also much faster than in a fight: 1.3 seconds against 2.58 for a one-hander.
  • The primary swings through a 90 degree arc, the widest of the melee classes, and two-handed axes take no damage penalty when one swing catches several enemies.
  • The two-handed secondary is the cheapest stagger in the game: half a swing's stamina for 4x stagger in 0.84 seconds. Treat it as a stun button, not a damage button.
  • Knockback runs from 50 to 70. That is high enough to buy room without the club habit of punting a target out of your own reach.

Cons

  • Chop damage does nothing to a creature; it only cuts wood. A Berserkir Axes reads 220 total but lands only 140 of it on anything alive, so the class looks stronger on paper than it is in a fight.
  • Axes deal Slash. Nothing in the game is weak to slash and some creatures resist it, so an axe never gets the bonus a club gets against Skeletons.
  • Axes are slower than a sword and dearer to swing. The one-handed combo takes 2.58 seconds against a sword's cheaper, faster one, and the top of the class costs up to 22 stamina a hit.
  • Reach is 2.2 to 2.5 metres, short of a polearm at 3.2, so nothing here hits first.

Builds

One-handed with a shield is the practical build, because the same axe clears the forest. The secondary is a vertical downward chop for 1.5x damage at double stamina, and it is the one swing that reaches a tree stump too low for a normal arc.

Two-handed trades the shield for 2.5 metres of reach, 1.5x stagger and the multi-target rule. Open with the secondary, which takes 0.84 seconds and half the stamina for 4x stagger, then run the full combo into the staggered enemy. That loop is the reason to carry a battleaxe at all.

Dual-wield gives 6 hits across a 3.62-second combo. The third and fourth movements land with both axes at once, and the secondary leaps forward into a double slash. The damage is front-loaded into a long animation, so it needs space and a target that is already staggered.

Against Skeletons or the Charred, put the axe away and bring blunt: no amount of Axes skill beats a resistance.

Axes are made at the Black forge, the Forge, the Workbench and the Frost Foundry, or by hand.

The skill is Axes, and it levels up through use, not choice.

Notes

  • Chop damage applies to trees, not creatures, which is why a tree falls to an axe and nothing else.
  • The trees an axe can fell are part of its tier. Stone and flint handle Beech, Fir and Pine. Bronze and iron add Birch, Oak and the Ancient Tree. Only the Black Metal Axe and the Jotun Bane cut Yggdrasil Shoots and Scorched Trees.
  • The first hit of a two-handed combo is by far the slowest at 1.58 seconds. The second and third take about 0.92 and 0.7, and they carry triple damage between them.
