The Greyling is the token predator of the Meadows and almost always a new Viking's first kill. It is barely knee-high and made of little more than moss and twigs. With 20 health and a five point scratch it is less an enemy than a tutorial, though one that shuffles in behind a distracted player halfway through a roof can still chip them down. Treat it as a walking lump of resin rather than a threat.

Behaviour

Greylings shamble towards you the instant they notice you and keep coming. They have one attack, a sideways swipe of an arm through a short arc in front of them for 5 slash, repeated every couple of seconds while you stand within a metre or so. That swipe is all they do: they will not shoot, heal, summon help or retreat at low health, and they neither sleep nor patrol in any meaningful sense. The normal spawn cap allows only a couple loose at a time, so you meet them alone or in pairs rather than as a swarm, and killing one does not bring others running. They are much slower than a sprinting player, so you can always just walk away, and they trail after you until they lose track of you entirely. Their only real trick is persistence: a Greyling will follow you across the Meadows indefinitely, which is exactly how they end up interrupting a build.

Where to Find It

Greylings spawn anywhere in the wooded parts of the Meadows, favouring stands of trees and the fringes where grass meets forest over the open grassland. They are around from the first day of a new world, with no boss kill or event needed to unlock them. Normally the biome holds only a couple at a time, so they are common to bump into but never numerous. The exception is the raid that warns you the forest is moving, available at any point before The Elder is killed. During it the cap rises and they arrive very commonly alongside their larger Greydwarf relatives. Starred Greylings do not spawn naturally, so every one you meet has 20 health, a large part of why they never scale into a real problem. Cross the border into the Black Forest and Greydwarfs replace them, the same idea with twice the health and a stone to throw.

Strengths and Weaknesses

A Stone Axe kills a Greyling in a couple of swings and a Flint Spear does it in one, and the swipe is slow enough that stepping back out of the arc costs you nothing. If you want it gone instantly, fire does double damage, so a lit Torch or a single Fire Arrow is satisfying overkill. A Campfire at the edge of your build deals with any that wander in without you lifting a finger. Blocking works fine with even the starting wooden shield, and a parry staggers them immediately given how little punishment they can take. The only things not worth bringing are poison, which they resist by half, and spirit damage, which they ignore completely, though you will not own either while Greylings still matter. The real advice is to stop spending arrows on them: walk up and hit it.

  • It takes far more damage from Fire.
  • It resists Poison, at half damage.
  • It ignores Spirit.

Drops

Resin is their only drop, but early on it is exactly what your Torches and Sconces need.

Notes

  • Along with Necks and Boars, Greylings are one of the first enemies you are likely to meet.
  • 1-star and 2-star Greylings can only be spawned with commands, and they take on the look of the 1-star and 2-star Greydwarfs.
