Staff of Protection harms nobody. It spends a little of the caster's own health and gives back a shell of magic, which is the trade you want when the Mistlands close in from three sides at once. Instead of dealing damage, each cast wraps the caster, nearby players and tamed creatures in a barrier that absorbs damage. It carries 48 block armour, or 96 when used to parry at its 2x bonus.
How to Craft
Made at a level 1 galdr table, from:
- 20x Yggdrasil Wood: Chopped from Yggdrasil shoots in the Mistlands.
- 4x Blood Clot: Dropped by ticks in the Mistlands.
- 16x Refined Eitr: Refined from sap and soft tissue at an eitr refinery.
| Name | Image | Biome | Crafting Station | Spawn ID |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Yggdrasil Wood | Mistlands | - | spawn YggdrasilWood

| Blood Clot | Mistlands | - | spawn GiantBloodSack

| Refined Eitr | Mistlands | Eitr Refinery | spawn Eitr

When to Use It
Mid game. It needs Mistlands materials and a Galdr Table rather than the Black Forge that makes Mistlands weapons, so it comes after Yagluth and the sea crossing beyond him. The Ashlands and the Deep North still lie past this point.
Upgrades
It can be upgraded 3 times after crafting, and each level needs the station built one step higher than the last. Every other figure on this page is for quality 1, so this table shows where your own copy sits:

Properties
Each cast costs 60 Eitr and up to 40% of your current health. Because it takes current rather than maximum health, it cannot kill you, and the barrier's size scales with Blood Magic.
A player with a barrier can always parry, whatever their weapon, maximum health or stagger limit, and even if the attack breaks the barrier. That makes 2-star late-game enemies parryable, and a parried enemy is staggered and takes double damage. It is the single most useful thing in the class.
Recast on broken barriers, not damaged ones. A recast resets the barrier's duration but not its absorption, so topping up someone whose shield is half gone does almost nothing. In a fight, cover whoever has lost theirs entirely first.
Notes
- The barrier is raw hit points with a damage gate. It inherits none of the target's armour, resistances or immunities, so it absorbs elemental damage exactly as well as physical.
- It works on tamed creatures and on a Skelett as readily as on a player.
