A base needs lighting long before there is any Iron in the chest, and this is the Lighting tab's first answer: two lengths of Wood and two lumps of Resin on a stake. The Standing Wood Torch throws the same warm light as its iron cousin for a fraction of the cost, so it is the one you plant along the earliest paths out of camp.

How to Build It

The whole cost is two Wood and two Resin with a Workbench in range, so these go up early and in numbers. Its fuel hopper is smaller than the iron torches carry, so expect to top it up more often. Rain does not hurt it, and a ring of them round a clearing means you see what is walking in while it is still out at the fence.
