Building Elements

Grausten roof

Building elements are the walls, floors, roofs, beams, stairs, doors and supports you place with the Hammer. They are grouped by function rather than material, because a roof is still a roof whether it is thatch, shingle, stone or Grausten.

Every material family covers roughly the same set of shapes. Wood is the cheapest and most flexible, but it decays in the rain if you leave it uncovered. Core Wood uses the same shapes with better vertical support. Stone and later Grausten need a Stonecutter nearby and do not rot. Black Marble and Flametal are the late-game tiers, used as much for looks as for structure.

Required Stations and Build Range

You can only place building pieces inside the working radius of the correct station, and each station covers a different part of the build menu.

Station Image Building/Crafting Base Range Max Range Range Increase
Workbench Workbench Almost everything for wood construction as well as basic equipment crafting and repairing. 20 m 36 m Four metres more for each of its four upgrades.
Stonecutter Stonecutter Stone, black marble and grausten pieces. 20 m 20 m It has one level, so the radius never grows.
Forge Forge The metal parts and fittings: iron gates, cage walls, chains and the metal furniture. 20 m 38 m Three metres more for each upgrade.

A station only needs to be in range for building. Crafting and repairing also ask for a roof and 70% cover.

Stability and Support

Stability is the real limit on what you can build. Pieces inherit support from whatever they rest on. Blue means fully grounded and green is solid, while yellow, orange and red show increasing weakness. A red piece will collapse if you try to build further on it.

Wood and stone poles max out at around 16 m of pure vertical height, Core Wood poles reach about 24 m, and iron-reinforced poles go much higher. Horizontal runs lose support faster than vertical ones, so long floors and roofs need beams or poles in between.

Raising the terrain with the Hoe so floors sit directly on blue ground is one of the most reliable ways to keep large builds stable. Trees and large rocks also count as grounded support.

Weather and Durability

Wooden pieces that are not under a roof take weather damage in the rain and drop to 50 % durability over time. Stone, Black Marble, Grausten and Crystal never decay from rain or water. Building the roof early is the simplest way to protect a wooden structure while you finish the rest.

Most wood and stone pieces share a 2 m grid, which is why they mix cleanly. The standard roof pitches are 26°, 45° and (from the Deep North) 67°, and almost every roof family has matching walls, beams and corners for these angles.

Notes

  • Removing a piece with the Hammer refunds its full material cost.
  • A piece can only be placed with the required crafting station in range.
  • Hover over a piece with the Hammer equipped to see its stability color.
  • Mixing materials is normal and often better than building from one. Stone foundations, Corewood supports, upper walls of Wood and a thatch or shingle roof make a common and effective combination.
  • Defensive pieces such as stake walls follow different durability rules and do not rot in the rain the way regular wood does.
