The Archgriffin is a Hybrid and a stronger kind of Griffin, the beast that is half eagle and half wildcat. Archgriffins nest on hilltops and lonely islands in Velen, Skellige and the lands around Novigrad. They are among the most hated of all griffins.

Lore

Griffins once lived only high in the mountains, where they hunted marmots and wild goats. Then humans moved onto their lands. The griffins soon found prey that was far more plentiful and easier to catch: cows, sheep and shepherds. One witness to a griffin attack described it this way: "Aye, half-eagle, half tomcat, just like on the lord's crest. 'Cept this 'un was carryin' me dead cow 'stead of a scepter."

Griffins still keep away from main roads and towns, where people who can afford a witcher tend to live. Even so, they have gone from rare sights to common pests known across the Northern Realms. The royal griffin and the archgriffin are hated most of all.

Behaviour

An archgriffin builds its nest on high ground, such as a hilltop or the summit of an island. The torn bodies of travelers and treasure hunters are often found near its nest. An archgriffin carries a gland full of acid, which armorers prize for forging the finest armor.

Weaknesses

Coat the silver sword with Hybrid Oil. An archgriffin fights almost exactly like a common griffin, so the same tactics work. Aard can knock it out of the air.

An archgriffin is the target of Contract: Components for an Armorer, near Crow's Perch in Velen. The contract follows Master Armorers. The armorer Yoana needs acid from an archgriffin's gland to forge armor. The beast nests on a hill north of Crow's Perch. Witcher Senses pick up a trail of blood and a feather on the way. After the kill, the acid gland goes to Yoana and the trophy goes to the Baron's quartermaster.

In the treasure hunt Unlucky's Treasure, an archgriffin nests on Snidhall Isle in Skellige. The notes of an unlucky warrior lie in its nest, and they lead to his hidden treasure. In the treasure hunt A Surprise Inheritance, from Hearts of Stone, an archgriffin has made its home over a ruined hut north of Novigrad. Knut Kreutzman's journal tells of the fortune hidden in the hut's cellar.
