The Basilisk is a Draconid that kills with acid, venom, claws and teeth. It loves dark, damp places such as cellars, caves and city sewers. One basilisk plays a key part in Ciri's story, in the main quest Ciri's Story: Out of the Shadows.
Lore
A gravestone in the Vizima cemetery remembers the noble knight Roderick. Roderick died in a brave fight against a basilisk. The inscription ends with the hope that the beast choked on the knight's bones.
Many people believe a basilisk can turn anything to stone with its gaze. It cannot. That is small comfort, though, because it has plenty of other ways to kill.
Basilisk leather is a highly valued material. It is used to make fashionable shoes and women's handbags. For this reason, many men hunt basilisks, their courage fired by greed for gold. Most of these hunts end in disaster. Some hunters do bring home their prey, and the number of basilisks has dropped sharply as a result. Some mages and druids think basilisks should be protected as a dying species. Everyone else thinks those mages and druids have gone completely mad.
Behaviour
Basilisks hunt by day. A basilisk waits patiently in hiding for its prey to come close. Then it leaps out in a flash and strikes.
Weaknesses
Coat the blade with Draconid Oil and keep Aard ready. Drink Golden Oriole before the fight, because it gives resistance to the basilisk's venom. Grapeshot and Dancing Star bombs work especially well against basilisks.

A basilisk is the foe of Ciri's Story: Out of the Shadows, a main quest in Velen. Ciri and the baron are racing their horses when a basilisk swoops down and ends the contest. The beast snatches the baron and carries the man off to its nest at the top of a ruined tower. Ciri runs to the rescue.
The fight starts on the ground. Ciri then climbs the stone ledges with white markings up the side of the tower. Partway up, Ciri has no other way to reach the top in time, so she uses her powers. She appears in front of the basilisk in a flash and kills it before it can hurt the baron. Using that power has a price. Ciri knows it will draw the Wild Hunt and put the innocent people of the area in danger. She sets off for Novigrad soon after.
