The Katakan is one of the Vampires. It looks like a huge bat with long fangs and even longer talons. Katakans hide in the dark corners of Novigrad, including the city sewers.
Lore
An old prayer to Melitele, the Great Mother, asks for protection from evil, from unclean devils and foul demons. Above all, it asks for protection from the clutches of katakans and nekurats.
Katakans and their more dangerous kin, the nekurats, are the very picture of human fear. They hide in the shadows and feed on blood. They can also turn invisible. While unseen, they wait as the dread of an attack that cannot be stopped overwhelms their victim.
The legends get one thing wrong. Sunlight does not turn a katakan to ash. It does hurt them, though. When the sun stands at its highest, a katakan heals much more slowly.
Behaviour
A katakan hears very well and moves at incredible speed. Its wounds close quickly, and steel cannot harm it. It prefers to strike from hiding, after turning invisible.
Weaknesses
Coat the silver sword with Vampire Oil. Use the Yrden Sign to pin the katakan in place for a short time. Attack with all strength at that moment, because there might not be another chance. Igni works against it too, and Moon Dust and Devil's Puffball bombs are useful.
While the katakan is invisible, watch the ground. Its shadow is often the only sign of where it is. The vampire attacks fast, so short, quick strikes work best. Keep Quen up and recast it as soon as the shield breaks.
A fight at midday gives an edge. At that hour the sun slows the katakan's healing.

A katakan lurks in the sewers of Novigrad during Now or Never, a main quest in the city.
In Carnal Sins, a secondary quest in Novigrad, the trail of a killer leads to Hubert Rejk. In a warehouse by the docks, he reveals that he is a vampire and fights in the form of a katakan. His body yields the Deargdeith sword and a Katakan Mutagen.
Gael, the target of Contract: The Oxenfurt Drunk, is a katakan with a taste for blood soaked in alcohol.
