The Shaelmaar is a Relict, a huge burrowing beast that lives in Toussaint. In the words of the witcher, it looks like a cross between a mole and a caterpillar, only as big as a barn. The first one is fought in the arena during The Beast of Toussaint, early in the Blood and Wine story.
Lore
Shaelmaars spend most of their lives deep underground, with no contact with the world above. Now and then, though, one digs its way to the surface and eats any men within reach. Others burrow tunnels close to the surface. Buildings collapse above them, and the ground shakes.
Behaviour
Shaelmaars are blind. They find their way by feeling vibrations and listening for sounds.
A shaelmaar looks clumsy and easy to hit. Its armor makes up for that. Even the strongest blows bounce off the plates on its back, so it has little need to dodge. When threatened, it curls up into a ball and rolls forward with huge force. Nothing in its path can stop it.
Weaknesses
Coat the blade with Relict Oil. Aard and the Samum bomb are the key tools. Quen offers little protection, because a single charge breaks through it.
Its blindness is the way to beat it. Stand near a wall or a boulder and make a noise with Aard or a Samum bomb. The shaelmaar rolls toward the sound. Dodge to the side at the last moment, and the beast slams into the obstacle at full speed. The crash knocks it down and shows its soft underbelly. Strike hard while it lies there.
Stay out of the way of every charge. Late in the fight, the shaelmaar digs into the ground and throws rocks in every direction. Back away until that attack ends.

A shaelmaar is fought in the arena in The Beast of Toussaint, a main quest of Blood and Wine. The knight Palmerin fights at the witcher's side. Once the beast is beaten, a choice follows: kill the shaelmaar or spare its life.
Another shaelmaar appears in What Was This About Again?, a level 43 treasure hunt in Toussaint. A riverboat lies wrecked north of Plegmund's Bridge on the Sansretour. The captain's log on a skeleton aboard tells how the boat ran aground, with a shaelmaar playing a part in the wreck. The log also mentions a casket full of jewels. The shaelmaar is met on the way to the treasure.
A third shaelmaar is the target of Vintner's Contract: Duchaton Crest.
