The Shaelmaar from the Emperor of Nilfgaard is a Relict kept for the arena of the Tourney Grounds in Toussaint. It is fought early in the Toussaint story, during the main quest The Beast of Toussaint.
Lore
A shaelmaar was once described as a cross between a mole and a caterpillar, as big as a barn. Its round, bulky body is covered in thick, bony plates that form an almost unbreakable shell. As its name says, this one came from the Emperor of Nilfgaard. It was put in the arena to entertain the crowds at the duchess's tourney.
Shaelmaars spend most of their lives deep underground, far from the world above. Now and then, one digs its way to the surface and eats any men within reach. Some shaelmaars also dig tunnels close to the surface. The tunnels make buildings collapse and the ground shake.
Behaviour
Shaelmaars are blind. They find their way by sensing vibrations and listening for sounds. A shaelmaar under threat curls up into a ball and rolls forward with tremendous force. In that shape it crushes everything in its path.
Weaknesses
Coat the blade with Relict Oil, so every opening counts.
Strong blows bounce off the armored plates on its back, so attacking it head on is useless. The trick is to make it crash, and Aard and Samum bombs both help with that. Stand near the arena wall and wait for the rolling charge, then roll aside at the last moment. When the shaelmaar slams into the wall, it falls over and shows its belly. Strike hard while it lies there. Throwing something noisy against a wall can also lure it into a crash, since it rolls toward sounds.
The shaelmaar also smashes the ground and sends a wave of rocks flying. Roll out of the path of that wave. Palmerin joins the fight to help, and he draws some of its attacks.

- After defeating the bruxa at Corvo Bianco, find Palmerin and ask him to lead the way to the duchess.
- Follow the quest to the Tourney Grounds outside the walls of Beauclair.
- Approach the arena. After the cutscene, step in to face the shaelmaar.
- Defeat the shaelmaar. Lure its rolling charge into the arena wall, then strike its exposed belly.
- Choose whether to kill or spare the shaelmaar when the duchess calls for the final blow.
- Follow the duchess to the palace gardens.

The fight takes place in the main quest The Beast of Toussaint. After a bruxa attack at Corvo Bianco, the next step is a meeting with Duchess Anna Henrietta. She is watching a tourney on the Tourney Grounds outside the walls of Beauclair. During a fight in the arena, the witcher steps in to face the shaelmaar.
Once the shaelmaar is beaten, the duchess calls from the stands for the final blow. The beast can be killed or spared. Then the duchess leads the way to the palace gardens to continue the investigation.
