Fortunate Son is a side job for the Aldecaldos, after Queen of the Highway. Jake Scooter, a nomad wounded by a Raffen Shiv bullet in the recent attack on the camp, needs a special kidney implant fast. Bob and Emily ask V to pick it up from a hospital employee in Little China, Watson, in a deal set up by Dakota Smith. The deal is not as clean as it looks.

Story

A Death Sentence

The journal sets the stakes. Kidney failure is nothing in the city that a stack of eddies and a few minutes cannot fix. In the Badlands, it is a death sentence, unless some gentle soul feels like playing guardian angel and gets the implant to Jake before it is too late. The journal wonders whether anyone like that is out there.

In the newly moved Aldecaldo camp, Bob is checking on Jake, and the news is not good. Jake needs the implant for his condition, and Dakota has arranged a pickup with an employee of a hospital in Little China.

The Pickup

At the hospital, the employee waits in the cargo area at the back with the implant. As soon as V takes the briefcase, he runs off, and the NCPD charges in. V must fight them all, as running away does not move the job on.

The Employee

With the police dead, V confronts the employee. He explains that the NCPD learned of the deal and moved in to kill V. They believed Dakota was helping the Raffen Shiv, and could not tell those raiders from the nomads. Something else is wrong with the implant too. The police put a virus in its firmware.

Fortunate Son Map Location and Walkthrough

Fortunate Son map location:

  1. Finish Queen of the Highway and wait some time.
  2. Talk to Bob and Emily in their tents at the new Aldecaldo camp and agree to help.
  3. Go to the hospital in Little China and meet the employee in the back cargo area. The job is time sensitive.
  4. Take the briefcase with the implant.
  5. Defeat the police. Do not run.
  6. Confront the hospital employee.
  7. With enough Intelligence, ask whether anyone else touched the implant. He reveals the virus and hands over the original part.
  8. Let him go, or kill him.
  9. Return to the Aldecaldo camp and talk to Bob.
  10. Wait eight hours for the results of the surgery.
  11. Read Bob's message, return to the camp and talk to Bob.

Choices

The Virus

Passing the Intelligence check reveals the virus straight away. Without it, sparing the employee still works: he calls out to V as V leaves, explains the NCPD malware, and gives V a shard to remove it. Either way, Jake's body accepts the implant, and Bob thanks V for helping him recover.

Killing the employee leaves the virus undiscovered. Jake's body rejects the implant and he dies. Bob is sympathetic and does not blame V.

Rewards

The job pays experience and Street Cred whatever happens to Jake.

Tips

Spare the hospital employee, or invest in Intelligence, for the best outcome. The police attack hard at the pickup, so arrive ready for a fight.
