I Walk the Line is the main job in which V carries out the Voodoo Boys' job in the Grand Imperial Mall in Coastview, Pacifica. Placide wants a NetWatch agent hiding in the mall's cinema found and dealt with, so that the gang will grant V a meeting with Brigitte. The Animals gang guards the mall, and the agent has a deal of his own to offer.

Story

Placide's Job

The goal is clear. V must find a netrunner in the mall, and in return the Voodoo Boys will arrange a meeting with their leader. Johnny is as fed up with Placide as V is. In the journal he sees one upside: he may finally meet a real netrunner, someone brave enough to face the Voodoo Boys. The downside is that V's brain could start dripping out of V's ears at any minute.

Placide's people wait outside the Grand Imperial Mall, a huge unfinished shopping centre. They send V in through the garage. Placide stays linked to V the whole way and guides V from the net.

The Grand Imperial Mall

The Animals fill the garage, the gym and the great atrium on the ground floor, with a turret among them. Placide wants V to reach a van parked in the atrium and connect to it. The van is linked by a thick cable to a server in a side room, and plugging in shows that the NetWatch agent is in the cinema upstairs. It also warns the agent that V is coming.

Sasquatch

The leader of the Animals, Sasquatch, guards the cinema entrance with a huge hammer. If V has been seen, the agent shuts the cinema gates and Sasquatch attacks. While V fights her, the agent tries to burn out V's brain, and only Placide's help keeps V alive. If V has stayed unseen the whole way, the gates stay open, and V can slip past Sasquatch without a fight.

Bryce Mosley

In the projection room, V finds the NetWatch agent, Bryce Mosley. He tells V that the Voodoo Boys plan to betray V. Placide has used V to upload a virus. If it runs, it will wipe out NetWatch sites across the continent and try to kill V too. Mosley offers to remove it.

Batty's Hotel

Placide's sentries wait outside the mall and are shocked to see V alive. They offer V a ride back to Batty's Hotel, the Voodoo Boys' base. There, V talks to Placide and then to Brigitte, who offers V a deal. The story continues in Transmission.

The Mall

  1. Leave Batty's Hotel and meet Placide's people near an old car outside the mall.
  2. Go round to the back entrance as they say, past two sentries on motorbikes.
  3. Enter the garage. Several Animals stand at the entrance, with more inside.
  4. Climb the crates to a raised platform that leads towards the gym.
  5. Hack the camera in the corridor and take out the lone guard quietly.
  6. Stay crouched past the two Animals talking at the gym entrance. Turn right, climb over the bar and keep to the right to reach the atrium.
  7. Or, with enough Body or Technical Ability, open the doors on the right of the corridor before the gym. They lead straight to the upper floor.

The Van

  1. Enter the atrium from a corner of the gallery and take the escalators down.
  2. Keep to the left side of the lower floor to reach the side room with the server.
  3. Deal with the three Animals by the van, then connect to it.

The Cinema

  1. Go up to the cinema on the upper floor.
  2. Defeat Sasquatch if she attacks. Shoot the glowing implant on her back to stop her healing.
  3. Or, if V has not been seen, sneak past her through the open gates.
  4. Or skip the van and Sasquatch altogether: go up to the upper floor, walk into the Kabayan Foods restaurant and leave by its far door, which leads straight to the cinema.
  5. Pick up Sasquatch's Hammer from the edge of her room.
  6. Find Bryce Mosley in the projection room and talk to him.

Back to Batty's

  1. Leave the mall and take the ride with Placide's men, or go back alone.
  2. Find Placide in the workroom at Batty's Hotel and talk to him.
  3. Talk to Brigitte and accept her offer.

Choices

The NetWatch Agent

Mosley's offer is the big choice of the job. V can side with him and let him remove the virus, which stops the Voodoo Boys' attack on NetWatch. The Voodoo Boys then turn hostile, and this changes the next main job, Transmission, and V's dealings with Brigitte and her netrunners.

Or V can knock him out and stay with Placide's plan. The virus then hits NetWatch sites across the continent. Back at the hotel, Brigitte stands up for V and says that V is no ranyon, the Creole word for a rag or a throwaway outsider. If V took Mosley's deal, Placide calls V a filthy ranyon instead.

The Approach

The mall can be cleared by force, crept through, or skipped almost entirely. Staying hidden keeps the cinema gates open and avoids the fight with Sasquatch.

Rewards

Completing I Walk the Line rewards Sasquatch's Hammer (missable).

The Iconic hammer Sasquatch's Hammer lies on the ground at the edge of the room where Sasquatch is met. It can be taken even when the fight is avoided by stealth, though that is tricky.

Tips

The fight with Sasquatch is a race, as the agent is trying to kill V at the same time. Her swings are powerful but slow, with several seconds between them. Aim for the glowing implant on her back.

Notes

  • A shard listing the regional directors of NetWatch lies on a seat in the cinema, beside the stairs.
  • If V refuses Brigitte's offer at first, she may later be gone from the hotel, and V has to find her again.
